“For men whom neither trade nor business [100] divert from the remembrance of Allah and the performing of prayer and paying the poor-due [101]. They fear a day [102] in which hearts and eyes shall be turned about [103].”
This verse praises true believers — righteous men who, despite engaging in lawful worldly work like trade and commerce, are never distracted from their spiritual obligations.
They exemplify the perfect balance between material responsibility and spiritual devotion.
Their hearts remain attached to:
Remembrance of Allah (Dhikr),
Salah (Prayer),
And fulfilling the rights of others through Zakah (charity).
These men:
Establish prayer consistently, not just when convenient.
Pay Zakah willingly, understanding it is a divine right of the poor and not a favor.
The sequence in the verse (prayer, then Zakah) mirrors the broader Islamic legal and spiritual structure, highlighting acts of direct devotion and social justice.
The believers described are not heedless of the Hereafter. Instead, they carry in their hearts a deep consciousness of the Day of Judgment, the day:
That hearts will tremble, overcome by fear and awe,
That eyes will shift, overwhelmed by panic and desperation.
“Hearts and eyes shall be turned about” refers to:
The horror and intensity of the Day of Resurrection,
The emotional upheaval when reality dawns and all illusions disappear.
These men’s righteous actions are driven by an ever-present awareness of this inevitable event.
