📖 Commentary of Surah Ar-Rum – Verse 10

"Then the end of those who committed evil to their limit was thus that they began to belie the signs of Allah and to mock [20] at them."

✅ [20] Consequence of Persistent Evil

This verse describes the final state of those who indulged excessively in evil deeds—they reached a point where they began to deny Allah’s signs and mock them. This was not sudden but a gradual moral decline that led to spiritual ruin.

According to the insights of great Sufi sages, this decline often starts with neglecting the Sunnah. The one who omits Sunnah eventually neglects obligatory (Fard) duties, and such a person may later abandon correct beliefs altogether. Just as breaking the first wall of a protected home allows the rest to be violated, Sunnah acts as the first wall of Islam—once it is compromised, everything else becomes vulnerable.

This verse reminds us that the incorrect beliefs of the disbelievers were a result of their corrupt actions and attitudes, showing how habitual sin can harden the heart and lead to disbelief.

Ibn-Kathir

10. Then evil was the end of those who did evil, because they denied the Ayat of Allah and made a mockery of them.) This is like the Ayat:

﴿وَنُقَلِّبُ أَفْئِدَتَهُمْ وَأَبْصَـرَهُمْ كَمَا لَمْ يُؤْمِنُواْ بِهِ أَوَّلَ مَرَّةٍ وَنَذَرُهُمْ فِى طُغْيَانِهِمْ يَعْمَهُونَ ﴾

(And We shall turn their hearts and their eyes away, as they refused to believe therein for the first time, and We shall leave them in their trespass to wander blindly.) (6:110),

(So when they turned away, Allah turned their hearts away.) (61:5),

(And if they turn away, then know that Allah’s will is to punish them for some sins of theirs) (5:49). It was said that the meaning of the phrase

(Then evil was the end of those who did evil,) is that evil was their inevitable end, because they rejected the signs of Allah and made fun of them. This is the view of Ibn Jarir, which he recorded from Ibn `Abbas and Qatadah. Ibn Abi Hatim also recorded it from them and from Ad-Dahhak bin Muzahim. This is the apparent meaning — and Allah knows best — of the phrase:

﴿وَكَانُواْ بِهَا يَسْتَهْزِئُونَ﴾

(and made a mockery of them.)

(30:10) Evil was the end of those evil-doers, for they gave the lie to Allah’s Signs and scoffed at them.

Ala-Maududi

(30:10) Evil was the end of those evil-doers, for they gave the lie to Allah’s Signs and scoffed at them.

There is no commentary by Abul Maududi available for this verse.

(10) Then the end of those who did evil was the worst [consequence] because they denied the signs of Allāh and used to ridicule them.
