📖 Commentary of Surah As-Saffaat – Verse 158

"And they have set up a blood kinship [159] between Him and the Jinns. And indeed the jinns know that they shall be presented [160] (before Him)."

✅ [159] The False Claim of Kinship with Jinn

Some polytheists falsely claimed that Allah Almighty married among the jinn, and that the angels were born from this union (according to Tafsir Al-Irfaan).

This verse refutes such claims by explaining that blood kinship or family lineage refers to relationships within the same species or kind, and does not apply between Allah and created beings of a different nature.

The verse clarifies that the relationship of servitude and love between Allah and His servants does not depend on gender or kinship, but is spiritual:

  • Humans and jinn are His slaves.

  • The Prophet is His beloved.

  • All creation are His worshippers.

✅ [160] Accountability Despite the False Claim

The jinn, despite their false claim of kinship, know that they will be brought before Allah for judgment.

If they were truly relatives of Allah, they would not face punishment. Yet, since they are accountable and will be judged, this shows the baselessness of their claim and Allah’s absolute authority over all beings.

Ibn-Kathir

The tafsir of Surah As-Saffat verse 158 by Ibn Kathir is unavailable here.
Please refer to Surah Saffat ayat 149 which provides the complete commentary from verse 149 through 160.

(37:158) They have established a kinship between Allah and the angels;[89] and the angels know well that these people will be arraigned (as culprits).

Ala-Maududi

(37:158) They have established a kinship between Allah and the angels;[89] and the angels know well that these people will be arraigned (as culprits).

89. Though the word used is al-jinnah instead of almalaikah, some major commentators have opined that here the word jinn has been used for malaikah in its literal sense (of hidden creation); malaikah (angels) also are, in reality, a hidden creation, and the following theme also demands that al jinnah here be taken in the sense of al-malaikah.

(158) And they have made [i.e., claimed] between Him and the jinn a lineage, but the jinn have already known that they [who made such claims] will be brought [to punishment].
