📖 Commentary of Surah As-Saffaat – Verse 76

"And We saved him and his family [75] from the great distress [76]."

✅ [75] The Saved Household

From this, two important points emerge:

  1. After preaching for 1,450 years, only a few members of his household accepted his message and attained salvation.

  2. Children are included among household members. In fact, even the wives of one’s sons are considered part of the family.

✅ [76] The Nature of the Distress

This "great distress" may refer either to the flood (drowning) or to the harm inflicted by the people upon him.

This also shows that the destruction of disbelievers is, in fact, a mercy for the believers, sparing them from further suffering and opposition.

Ibn-Kathir

The tafsir of Surah As-Saffat verse 76 by Ibn Kathir is unavailable here.
Please refer to Surah Saffat ayat 75 which provides the complete commentary from verse 75 through 82.

(37:76) We delivered him and his household from the great calamity;[41]

Ala-Maududi

(37:76) We delivered him and his household from the great calamity;[41]

41. That is, from the severe distress that was being caused to him on account of the continuous opposition and antagonism of a wicked and cruel people. This also contains a subtle allusion that just as the Prophet Noah (peace be upon him) and his companions were saved from the great distress, so We will also ultimately save the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and his companions from the great distress that is being caused to them by the people of Makkah.

(76) And We saved him and his family from the great affliction.
