📖 Commentary of Surah As-Sajdah – Verse 17

"And no soul knows [37] what joy for the eyes has been kept hidden for them as a reward for their (good) deeds [38]."

✅ [37] Hidden Rewards Beyond Imagination

This verse refers to the believers at large, not including the Holy Prophet ﷺ, who was shown all of Paradise during the Night of Mi’raaj.

The phrase “no soul knows” means that complete and detailed knowledge of the bounties of Paradise remains hidden, though through the blessings of the Holy Prophet ﷺ, we have been granted partial and summarized knowledge through revelation.
Thus, this verse does not negate the Prophet’s knowledge, nor does it reject the faith of the believers, who accept what is revealed even if not fully detailed.

✅ [38] Paradise Earned Through Deeds

This part refers specifically to the Paradise granted as a reward for righteous deeds.
However, this does not exclude:

  • Believers’ children who die young,

  • Those who did not get a chance to perform good deeds, or

  • Sinful believers who will eventually be admitted into Paradise after purification.

Ibn-Kathir

The tafsir of Surah Sajdah verse 17 by Ibn Kathir is unavailable here.
Please refer to Surah Sajdah ayat 15 which provides the complete commentary from verse 15 through 17.

(32:17) No one knows what delights of the eyes are kept hidden for them as a reward for their deeds.[29]

Ala-Maududi

(32:17) No one knows what delights of the eyes are kept hidden for them as a reward for their deeds.[29]

29. Bukhari, Muslim, Tirmidhi and Imam Ahmad have in different ways cited on the authority of Abu Hurairah that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Allah says: I have made ready for My righteous servants that which has neither been seen by the eye, nor heard by the ear, nor ever conceived by any man.” The same thing has been reported with a little difference in wording by Abu Said Khudri, Mughirah bin Shubah and Sahl bin Saad asSaidi from the Prophet (peace be upon him) and related with authentic links by Muslim. Ahmed, Ibn Jarir and Tirmidhi.

(17) And no soul knows what has been hidden for them of comfort for eyes [i.e., satisfaction] as reward for what they used to do.
