20. And as for those who are disobedient [40], their destination is the Fire. Whenever they will wish to come out of there, they will be thrown [41] back into the same, and it will be said to them; "Taste the punishment of this Fire which you used to belie(42)". (Kanzul Imaan Translation)

(20) But as for those who defiantly disobeyed, their refuge is the Fire. Every time they wish to emerge from it, they will be returned to it while it is said to them, "Taste the punishment of the Fire which you used to deny." (Saheen International Translation)

📖 Commentary of Surah As-Sajdah – Verse 20

"And as for those who are disobedient [40], their destination is the Fire. Whenever they will wish to come out of there, they will be thrown [41] back into the same, and it will be said to them; 'Taste the punishment of this Fire which you used to belie [42].'"

✅ [40] Disobedience as Rebellion Against Limits

The word “Fusooq” (disobedience) refers to crossing the limits:

  • For a sinful believer, it means exceeding the limits of piety.

  • For an infidel, it means exceeding the limits of faith.

  • But the greatest form of this is to insult the dignity of the Holy Prophet ﷺ, which exceeds even the limits of human decency.

In this verse, “faasiqoon” refers to disbelievers, not sinful believers.

✅ [41] Rejected Attempts to Escape Hell

The disbelievers in Hell will leap in agony, their bodies rising to the mouth of Hell in an attempt to escape its flames and pain.
At that moment, angels will strike them with maces, forcing them back down into the Fire.

This does not mean they are physically trying to flee, but rather that in their pain and torment, they surge upward, only to be cast back again.

✅ [42] Punishment for Denial

The command—“Taste the punishment”—signifies the eternal consequence of their denial of the truth.
They are now experiencing what they once mocked and rejected.

This verse highlights that such eternal punishment is only for disbelievers, not for sinful believers, if Allah wills.
Believers, even if sinful, will not remain in Hell forever, as they did not deny the truth.
