📖 Commentary of Surah As-Sajdah – Verse 5

"He regulates the affairs from the heavens and the earth [11]. Then it will return [12] to Him in a day, whose measure is a thousand years in your counting [13]."

✅ [11] Divine Delegation to the Angels

Allah has delegated the management of the heavens and the earth to the angels, assigning them different duties.
Thus, Allah is the true Administrator, while the visible and metaphorical management is through His angels.

This verse does not contradict: "Then they manage the affairs" (Surah An-Nazi’at, Verse 5).
Similarly, worldly affairs are visibly handled by kings and governors, and spiritual affairs are connected to the Saints of creation, including Ghauth and Qutub, each with their own roles—all under the Divine administration.

✅ [12] The Return of All Affairs to Allah

Every matter, management, and arrangement will ultimately return to Allah, especially on the Day of Judgment.
While angels will carry out tasks on that Day, it will be under Divine instruction, affirming that Allah alone is in control.

✅ [13] The Measure of the Day

Some disbelievers perceive the Day of Judgment as lasting fifty thousand years, others as a thousand years.
But for the believers, it will seem shorter than the time of one obligatory prayer (Fard Salah).

Therefore, there is no contradiction between Qur'anic verses and Hadith, as the perception of time will vary according to faith and status.

Ibn-Kathir

The tafsir of Surah Sajdah verse 5 by Ibn Kathir is unavailable here.
Please refer to Surah Sajdah ayat 4 which provides the complete commentary from verse 4 through 6.

(32:5) He governs from the heaven to the earth and then the record (of this governance) goes up to Him in a day whose measure is a thousand years in your reckoning.[9]

Ala-Maududi

(32:5) He governs from the heaven to the earth and then the record (of this governance) goes up to Him in a day whose measure is a thousand years in your reckoning.[9]

9. That is, “The events of a thousand years of your history are a day’s work for Allah.” He entrusts His scheme of work to the “angels of destiny”, who submit their report of work before Him and receive orders for the scheme of the next day (whose length according to your calculation would be a thousand years). This thing has also been expressed at two other places in the Quran, the study of which can help understand it. The disbelievers of Arabia said, “Muhammad (peace be upon him) claimed to be a Prophet many years ago. He has warned us again and again that if we did not accept his message and rejected his invitation, we would be seized by Allah’s torment. He has been repeating this threat since many years, but the torment has not overtaken us, although we have denied and rejected him clearly over and over again. Had his threats any substance in them, we would have been seized in the torment long ago.” In this connection, in Surah Al-Hajj Allah says: “These people are demanding of you to hasten the chastisement. Allah will never fail to fulfill His threat, but a day with your Lord is equal to a thousand years as you reckon.” (Surah Al-Hajj, Ayat 47).

In (Surah Al-Maarij, Ayat 1-7), it has been said: “An asker has asked for a torment, (the torment) which must befall the disbelievers. There is none to avert it. It is from that God Who is the Owner of the Steps of Ascent. The angels and the Spirit ascend to His Presence in a day whose measure is fifty thousand years. So, have patience, O Prophet, a graceful patience! They think it is far off, but We see it near at hand.”

What is meant to be impressed in these verses is this: Allah’s decrees are not passed and enforced in the history of mankind according to the earthly watches and calendars. When a nation is warned that if it adopted such and such an attitude in life, it would meet with such and such an end, the people would be foolish if from this they understood that the predicted consequences would follow their evil acts and deeds immediately. Not to speak of days and months and years, the occurrence of the results may even take centuries.

(5) He arranges [each] matter from the heaven to the earth; then it will ascend to Him in a Day, the extent of which is a thousand years of those which you count.
