18. The Divine Protection and Truthfulness of the Holy Prophet ﷺ

"And your companion is not at all mad." (Surah At-Takweer: 22)

1. The Protection of Prophets from Insanity

18. This verse establishes a fundamental truth about the nature of Prophets:

  • Safeguarded from Deficiencies: Prophets are divinely protected from insanity, dumbness, and deafness, as these would hinder the propagation of Allah’s message.
  • Perfect Mental and Physical Abilities: Since Prophets are chosen to deliver the divine message, they are granted perfect intellect, speech, and hearing to fulfill their mission effectively.

2. Allah’s Response to Objections Against the Holy Prophet ﷺ

  • Rejection of False Accusations: The disbelievers falsely accused the Holy Prophet ﷺ of madness. Allah Himself refutes this claim, affirming the Prophet’s wisdom and truthfulness.
  • Allah Defends His Messenger: Any objection against the Holy Prophet ﷺ is answered directly by Allah Almighty, proving his divine mission.

3. The Mutual Witnessing of Allah Almighty and the Holy Prophet ﷺ

  • The Command to Say ("Qul"): When objections are raised against Allah, the Holy Prophet ﷺ is commanded to respond on His behalf. This is why many Quranic verses begin with "Say" (Qul)—as the Prophet ﷺ is a witness to Allah’s truth.
  • Mutual Testimony: Just as the Holy Prophet ﷺ testifies to Allah’s Oneness and message, Allah testifies to the truthfulness of His Messenger.
  • A Witness is Fully Aware and Responsible: A true witness must have full knowledge and responsibility regarding their claim. The Holy Prophet ﷺ, being the ultimate witness of Allah’s message, possesses complete awareness and certainty in his mission.

Ala-Maududi

(81:22) (O people of Makkah), your companion[18] is not mad;

18. Your Companion: the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him). Here, making mention of the Prophet (peace be upon him) as the companion of the people of Makkah, they have been made to realize that the Prophet (peace be upon him) was no stranger for them. He was not an outsider but a man of their own clan and tribe; he had lived his whole life among them; even their children knew that he was a very wise man. They should not be so shameless as to call such a man a mad man. For further explanation, see (Surah An-Najm, ayat 1).

(22) And your companion [i.e., Prophet Muḥammad (ﷺ) ] is not [at all] mad.[1871]

[1871]- Literally, "possessed by jinn."
