18. This tells us that Prophets remain safeguarded from insanity. Dumbness, deafness and insanity are hindrances for propagation. Furthermore, any objections raised against the Holy Prophet ﷺ are being replied by Allah Almighty, and any objections raised against Allah Almighty are being answered by the Holy Prophet ﷺThere, the command SAY is ordained. Because is the the Holy Prophetﷺ witness of Allah Almighty and Allah Almighty is the witness of the Holy Prophet ﷺ.The witness is fully aware and responsible for the claim.

Ala-Maududi

(81:22) (O people of Makkah), your companion[18] is not mad;

18. Your Companion: the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him). Here, making mention of the Prophet (peace be upon him) as the companion of the people of Makkah, they have been made to realize that the Prophet (peace be upon him) was no stranger for them. He was not an outsider but a man of their own clan and tribe; he had lived his whole life among them; even their children knew that he was a very wise man. They should not be so shameless as to call such a man a mad man. For further explanation, see (Surah An-Najm, ayat 1).

(22) And your companion [i.e., Prophet Muḥammad (ﷺ) ] is not [at all] mad.[1871]

[1871]- Literally, "possessed by jinn."
