Tafsir (Commentary) of the Verse: And By Mount Sinai

The Loftiness of Mount Sinai

The phrase "And by Mount Sinai" refers to the sacred mountain where Hazrat Musa (peace be upon him) spoke to Allah Almighty. The term Tūr means "mountain," and Sinai refers to a lush green jungle surrounding this blessed location. Their mention emphasizes their sacredness and connection to divine revelation, as they are closely linked to Hazrat Musa (peace be upon him).

Hazrat Musa's Connection to Mount Sinai

Hazrat Musa (peace be upon him) was a seeker of divine guidance, and the Taurat (Torah) was the object of his desire. He traveled to Mount Sinai to receive the Book. In contrast, for the Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), the roles are reversed: the Holy Prophet is the object of desire, and the Holy Quran is the seeker, coming to him as a divine revelation.

  • The verses revealed in Makkah are known as Makkan verses, while those revealed after the migration to Madinah are called Madinite verses.
  • Every street and alley of Makkah and Madinah carries the sanctity of Mount Sinai, being part of the journey of divine revelation.

Spiritual Interpretations

  • The chest of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) is likened to Mount Sinai, being a treasure house of divine light, truth, and mystical knowledge. Just as Mount Sinai witnessed the refulgence of Allah when Hazrat Musa (peace be upon him) ascended, the blessed chest of the Prophet reflects Allah’s bounty every moment.
  • Some scholars associate Mount Sinai with Hazrat Uthman-e-Ghani (may Allah be pleased with him), the compiler of the Holy Quran. His efforts ensured the Quran’s preservation, making his connection to divine guidance as monumental as Mount Sinai.

Hazrat Uthman’s Hand and Divine Will

At Hudaibiyya, the Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) placed his blessed hand to represent Hazrat Uthman’s hand, declaring it to be the Hand of Allah. This further highlights Hazrat Uthman’s deep association with the Quran and his role as a medium through which divine guidance reached the people.

Ala-Maududi

(95:2) and by the Mount Sinai,[2]

2. The words in the original are Tur-i-Sinin. Sinin is another name for the Sinai Peninsula. It is called Saina or Sina as well as Sinin. In the Quran itself at one place the words Tur-i-Sinin have been used. Since the land in which Mt. Sinai is located is well known as Sina, we have adopted this well known name in the translation.
