Tafsir (Commentary) of the Verse: And By the Secure City
The Sacred City of Makkah
The "secure city" mentioned in the verse refers to the sacred city of Makkah, a place of immense significance in Islam. While Makkah lacks natural resources like figs and olives, its greatness lies in its sanctity, historical importance, and spiritual blessings.
The pronoun "this" (referring to Makkah) is used here to emphasize its presence and significance, as it was directly in front of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) when this verse was revealed.
The Peace and Security of Makkah
- Makkah is a city of peace and safety, as even animals, wild plants, and trees are protected within its boundaries.
- It is a place of trust, as the Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) lived there before establishing Madinah as a center of Islam.
- The Holy Ka'bah, Arafat, Mina, and other sacred locations are found in Makkah, making it a focal point of worship and pilgrimage.
Makkah’s Connection to Revelation
Makkah holds a special status because it was the city where:
- The Holy Quran was revealed to the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him).
- The Holy Prophet received divine communication, similar to how Hazrat Musa (peace be upon him) spoke to Allah Almighty at Mount Sinai.
- The Prophet was blessed with the miraculous journey of Me’raj.
Spiritual Interpretations
- The "secure city" is also interpreted by Sufi sages as the pure and blessed heart of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). This heart is described as a place of spiritual peace, where the seekers of Allah find fulfillment and divine blessings through devotion and love.
- Some scholars associate the "secure city" with Hazrat Ali Murtaza (may Allah be pleased with him), the "gate to the city of knowledge." Through him, saints and spiritual seekers receive divine wisdom and guidance until the Day of Judgment.
Symbolism of Makkah’s Safety and Trust
The security of Makkah symbolizes a deeper spiritual truth: just as Makkah provides safety and peace, the spiritual teachings of Islam offer safety and peace to the soul. Devotees who approach Makkah with love and devotion are blessed with Allah’s bounties and guidance, much like seekers in the marketplace exchange devotion for divine blessings.
