📖 Commentary of Surah Az-Zukhruf – Verse 78

"Indeed, We brought you the Truth [136] (Quran), but most of you were averse [137] to this Truth."

✅ [136] The Qur’an as Divine Truth

This verse affirms that the Holy Qur’an is the ultimate Truth, brought by the Prophet ﷺ, yet its source is Allah Almighty Himself. While the Prophet ﷺ delivered the message, it is made clear that Allah is the originator of this Truth. This highlights the divine nature of revelation, and affirms that rejecting the Prophet’s words is tantamount to rejecting Allah.

✅ [137] Aversion to Faith: Sign of Disbelief

The phrase "most of you were averse" shows that although some did accept, the majority rejected this divine truth. This reveals a consistent pattern throughout human history — truth was often met with arrogance, resistance, and mockery by the masses. The verse also implies that disgust, boredom, or apathy towards religion is a hallmark of disbelief, and a warning sign for those who find themselves uninterested in divine guidance.

Ibn-Kathir

The tafsir of Surah Zukhruf verse 78 by Ibn Kathir is unavailable here.
Please refer to Surah Zukhruf ayat 74 which provides the complete commentary from verse 74 through 80.

(43:78) We brought you the Truth; but to the truth most of you were averse.”[62]

Ala-Maududi

(43:78) We brought you the Truth; but to the truth most of you were averse.”[62]

62. That is, We made the reality plain to you, but you were fond of the imaginary, and you had an aversion to the truth. Now, why do you lament at the fate of your foolish choice? It may be a part of the Hell-keeper’s answer, and it may also be that his answer ended with: Here you must remain, and this second sentence as an addition by Allah. In the first case, the keeper’s saying: We had brought the Truth to you, is just like an official’s using the word “we” on behalf of his government, when he wants to say: Our government did this or gave such and such an order.

(78) We had certainly brought you the truth, but most of you, to the truth, were averse.
