📖 Commentary of Surah Az-Zukhruf – Verse 89

"So turn away from them and say: 'Peace!' [155] Then soon they will come to know."

✅ [154] Overlook, But Keep Preaching

The instruction to "turn away" means do not grieve over their disbelief. It does not prohibit Da’wah (propagation)—rather, the preaching of Islam will continue until the end of time. This is a command of emotional detachment, not a cancellation of the duty of conveying the message.

✅ [155] The Meaning of 'Peace' Here

The word "Peace" (Salaam) here is not out of affection, but rather a form of disengagement—as in, “I no longer wish to deal with you.” This is like saying “Salaam from afar” to cut ties, not to show respect.

It’s important to understand that Salaam has various meanings:

  • For disbelievers, it is a form of disdain when used like this verse.

  • When said in Tashahhud, it is a humble supplication for the Holy Prophet ﷺ.

  • When said among believers, it is a greeting of peace and brotherhood.

  • Allah’s Salaam upon His prophets is an expression of honour, as in: "Peace be upon the Messengers." (Surah As-Saffaat: 181)

In conclusion, this verse teaches us that cutting ties with persistent disbelievers is sometimes necessary, but the truth must still be conveyed, and the consequences of disbelief will soon be made evident to them.

Ala-Maududi

(43:89) Indulge them, (O Prophet), and say to them: “Peace to you.”[71] For soon they shall come to know.

71. That is, you should neither curse them for their scornful words and attitude of mockery and derision, nor respond with harsh words, just wish them well and take your leave.

(89) So turn aside from them and say, "Peace."[1456] But they are going to know.

[1456]- Meaning safety or security, i.e., "I will not harm you." This was before permission was granted for armed struggle.
