(17) But those who have avoided ṭāghūt,[1346] lest they worship it, and turned back to Allāh - for them are good tidings. So give good tidings to My servants (Saheen International Translation)

Surah Az-Zumar Ayat 17 Tafsir (Commentry)

47. In that he should remain aloof from him in matters of belief and practice. It should be remembered that TAGHOOT (devil) includes all things, which evoke in a person sedition and rebellion.

Hence the devil, the leaders of infidelity and idols are all part of 'Taghoot. It is important to remain away from all of them. This word is derived from 'Tagha' to denote rebelliousness. It shows the hyperbolic pattern of the noun. Those who regard Prophets as persons who mislead, is an eternal wretch. These august personalities are fountains of guidance.

48. This tells us that turning to Allah Almighty is given credence to those who safeguard themselves from defective beliefs. Darkness and light cannot gather in one place. It is not possible to link yourself with Allah Almighty as well as with those who are faithless.

Ibn-Kathir

17. Those who avoid At-Taghut by not worshipping them and turn to Allah, for them are glad tidings; so announce the good news to My servants. 18. Those who listen to the Word and follow the best thereof, those are (the ones) whom Allah has guided and those are men of understanding.

Good News for the Righteous `Abdur-Rahman bin Zayd bin Aslam said, narrating from his father

(Those who avoid At-Taghut by not worshipping them) was revealed concerning Zayd bin `Amr bin Nufayl and Abu Dharr and Salman Al-Farisi, may Allah be pleased with them. The correct view is that it includes them and all others who avoided worshipping idols and turned to the worship of Ar-Rahman. These are the people for whom there is good news in this world and in the Hereafter. Then Allah says:

(so announce the good news to My servants — those who listen to the Word and follow the best thereof,) meaning, those who understand it and act in accordance with it. This is like the Words of Allah, may He be exalted, to Musa, peace be upon him, when He gave him the Tawrah:

﴿فَخُذْهَا بِقُوَّةٍ وَأْمُرْ قَوْمَكَ يَأْخُذُواْ بِأَحْسَنِهَا﴾

(Hold unto these with firmness, and enjoin your people to take the better therein) (7:145).

(those are whom Allah has guided) means, those who are described in this manner are the ones whom Allah has guided in this world and the Hereafter.

(and those are men of understanding.) means, they possess sound reasoning and an upright nature.

(39:17) (On the other hand), good tidings await those who eschew serving false gods[35] and penitently return to Allah. (O Prophet), give good tidings to My servants,

Ala-Maududi

(39:17) (On the other hand), good tidings await those who eschew serving false gods[35] and penitently return to Allah. (O Prophet), give good tidings to My servants,

35. Taghut is from tughyan and means rebellion. If someone is called taghut (rebellion) instead of taghi (rebel), it would mean that he is a rebel incarnate. For example, if a person is called husn (beauty) instead of hasin (beautiful), it would mean that he has reached perfection in beauty. The deities other than Allah have been called taghut because it is rebellion to worship others besides Allah, but the one who has others worship him, is a rebel of the worst kind. For further explanation, see (Surah Al-Baqarah, Ayat 256), (Surah An-Nisa, Ayat 60), (Surah An-Nisa, Ayat 76), (Surah An-Naml, Ayat 36) and the E.Ns thereof.

(17) But those who have avoided ṭāghūt,[1346] lest they worship it, and turned back to Allāh - for them are good tidings. So give good tidings to My servants

[1346]- i.e., Satan or any false object of worship.
