Transliteration:( Wallazeenaj tanabut Taaghoota ai ya'budoohaa wa anaabooo ilal laahi lahumul bushraa; fabashshir 'ibaad )
"And those who saved [47] themselves from worshipping idols and turned [48] towards Allah in repentance, for them are glad tidings [49]. So, give good news to My such devotees."
The term “saved themselves” refers to those who completely detach from all forms of false worship—whether in belief or action.
Here, the word Taghoot encompasses all forces of rebellion against Allah: the devil, idols, and the leaders of disbelief.
It is derived from ‘Tagha’, meaning to cross limits—and thus, it signifies anything that becomes a source of corruption or misguidance.
Staying away from these is essential. One who regards Prophets as misguiding figures is among the most miserable of people, for Prophets are sources of pure guidance, not misguidance.
This verse highlights that true repentance and return to Allah is not accepted unless one first disassociates from falsehood.
Defective beliefs and pure monotheism cannot coexist—darkness and light do not mix.
Turning towards Allah must be wholehearted, without clinging to misguidance or its supporters.
Linking oneself to Allah while also maintaining ties to faithlessness is a contradiction that cannot stand.
Such individuals—who shun idols and Taghoot, and sincerely turn back to Allah—are given glad tidings of divine mercy and eternal success.
Allah honors them by addressing the Prophet ﷺ:
“Give good news to My such devotees.”
This shows Allah’s love and closeness to those who are sincere in their belief and repentance.
17. Those who avoid At-Taghut by not worshipping them and turn to Allah, for them are glad tidings; so announce the good news to My servants. 18. Those who listen to the Word and follow the best thereof, those are (the ones) whom Allah has guided and those are men of understanding.
(Those who avoid At-Taghut by not worshipping them) was revealed concerning Zayd bin `Amr bin Nufayl and Abu Dharr and Salman Al-Farisi, may Allah be pleased with them. The correct view is that it includes them and all others who avoided worshipping idols and turned to the worship of Ar-Rahman. These are the people for whom there is good news in this world and in the Hereafter. Then Allah says:
(so announce the good news to My servants — those who listen to the Word and follow the best thereof,) meaning, those who understand it and act in accordance with it. This is like the Words of Allah, may He be exalted, to Musa, peace be upon him, when He gave him the Tawrah:
(Hold unto these with firmness, and enjoin your people to take the better therein) (7:145).
(those are whom Allah has guided) means, those who are described in this manner are the ones whom Allah has guided in this world and the Hereafter.
(and those are men of understanding.) means, they possess sound reasoning and an upright nature.
(39:17) (On the other hand), good tidings await those who eschew serving false gods[35] and penitently return to Allah. (O Prophet), give good tidings to My servants,
35. Taghut is from tughyan and means rebellion. If someone is called taghut (rebellion) instead of taghi (rebel), it would mean that he is a rebel incarnate. For example, if a person is called husn (beauty) instead of hasin (beautiful), it would mean that he has reached perfection in beauty. The deities other than Allah have been called taghut because it is rebellion to worship others besides Allah, but the one who has others worship him, is a rebel of the worst kind.
