Transliteration:( Afamai yattaqee biwaj hihee sooo'al 'azaabi Yawmal Qiyaamah; wa qeela lizzaali meena zooqoo maa kuntum taksiboon )
"He who will make his face [69] to undergo the great punishment on the Day of Judgement is not equal to him who will be saved. And it will be said to the oppressors: 'Taste [70] what you earned'."
This verse refers to the humiliating condition of the disbelievers on the Day of Judgement.
Their hands will be tied to their necks, and a burning mountain of sulphuric acid will be hung from their throats.
They will be dragged and thrown face-first into Hell, showing extreme disgrace and helplessness.
This state is in sharp contrast to the saved ones, whose faces will be radiant and honored.
The phrase "Taste what you earned" is a divine declaration to the oppressors,
meaning: "Now suffer the result of your infidelity and evil deeds."
It is a declaration of justice and finality, where their own actions return to them as torment.
Two rulings emerge from this:
Minor children of polytheists and disbelievers will not be sent to Hell,
as they were not held accountable due to immaturity.
Adult disbelievers, even if not duty-bound by Islamic law,
will still be punished for their evil deeds,
because they knowingly rejected truth and acted corruptly.
24. Is he then, who will confront with his face the awful torment on the Day of Resurrection And it will be said to the wrongdoers: “Taste what you used to earn!” 25. Those before them denied, and so the torment came on them from directions they perceived not. 26. So, Allah made them to taste the disgrace in the present life, but greater is the torment of the Hereafter if they only knew!
(Is he then, who will confront with his face the awful torment on the Day of Resurrection) he will be rebuked and he and the evildoers like him will be told:
(Taste what you used to earn!) `Is this like the one who comes secure on the Day of Resurrection’ as Allah says:
(Is he who walks prone on his face, more rightly guided, or he who walks upright on the straight way) (67:22);
(The Day they will be dragged on their faces into the Fire (it will be said to them): “Taste you the touch of Hell!”) (54:48), and
(Is he who is cast into the Fire better or he who comes secure on the Day of Resurrection) (41:40) In each of these Ayat, it was sufficient to refer to one of the two groups.
(Those before them denied, and so the torment came on them from directions they perceived not.) means, the previous generations who denied the Messengers were destroyed by Allah for their sins. And none had they to protect them from Allah.
(So Allah made them to taste the disgrace in the present life,) means, by means of the punishment and revenge which He sent down upon them, and the rejoicing of the believers for what happened to them. So, let those who are addressed beware, for they have rejected the noblest of the Messengers and the Seal of the Prophets . And what Allah has promised them of severe punishment in the Hereafter is worse than whatever befell them in this world. Allah says:
(but greater is the torment of the Hereafter if they only knew!)
(39:24) How woeful is the plight of him who has nothing except his face to shield him from severe chastisement on the Day of Resurrection?[44] Such evil-doers shall be told: “Taste now the consequence of your deeds.”[45]
44. One takes a blow on his face only when he is absolutely helpless and powerless, otherwise until one has some power to resist, he goes on receiving the blows on the other parts of his body but saves his face. Therefore, here the extreme state of helplessness of a person has been depicted, saying that he will receive the severe punishment on his face.
45. The word kasab, in the Quranic terminology, implies one’s descrying and earning a reward and punishment in consequence of his actions and deeds. The real earning of a doer of good is that he becomes worthy of Allah’s reward, and the earning of the evil-doer is the punishment that he will receive in the Hereafter.
[1348]- Rather than his hands, which will be chained to his neck.
