📖 Commentary of Surah Az-Zumar – Verse 40

"On whom is imposed a disgraceful [98] penalty and on whom falls punishment [99] which is everlasting [100]."

✅ Disgraceful Punishment – Reserved for the Worst

[98] This refers to humiliating punishments, which may include:

  • Public disgrace, death, or punishment in the Hereafter.

  • If the meaning is restricted to the Hereafter, then this confirms that Allah will not humiliate sinful believers in the same way as disbelievers.

  • The embarrassment of the Hereafter is specially reserved for the disbelievers, not for those who possessed faith—even if they had committed sins.

✅ Punishment from Allah Alone

[99] This punishment is directly from Allah Almighty, not by any worldly force or intermediary. It signifies His absolute control over justice and accountability.

✅ Everlasting Punishment – The Final Destination

[100] This clearly indicates the eternal punishment of Hell. It applies only to the disbelievers, as their rejection of truth justifies an everlasting penalty.

  • Believers, even if sinful, will not remain in Hell forever.

  • This verse reinforces the idea of final justice and the inescapable fate of those who rejected the truth knowingly.
