📖 Commentary of Surah Fatir – Verse 13

"He merges the night with day and He merges [46] the day into the night. And He engages [47] the services of the sun and the moon, that each one runs up to an appointed [48] time. This is Allah, your Lord. His is the Kingdom [49] of the entire universe. And those whom you worship besides Him, own not even the husk [50] of a date palm."

✅ 46. The Gradual Interweaving of Night and Day

This refers to how in winter, nights are long and days short, and in summer, the reverse occurs. This is because portions of night are merged into day, and vice versa—showing Allah’s precise control over time.

✅ 47. The Sun and Moon Serve Without Rest

The sun and moon never take a break, nor do they require repair or maintenance. Their continual service benefits creation—they operate under Allah’s direct command for the benefit of mankind.

✅ 48. Celestial Motion and the Appointed Time

This verse establishes that the sun, moon, and stars are in motion, whereas the sky and earth remain stationary.
Hence, the ancient claim that the sky moves is incorrect, and the modern scientific view that the earth moves is also rejected here.
The phrase “appointed time” refers to the Day of Judgement, when their motions will cease.

✅ 49. Allah’s Ownership Is Absolute

The demonstrative pronoun “this” (huwal-lāh) doesn’t suggest physical perception, as Allah is beyond sensory detection. The verse reaffirms that the entire dominion belongs to Allah alone, with no partner in His sovereignty.

✅ 50. Rebuttal of False Worship and Clarification

The verse uses present tense for “you worship,” referring to the polytheists of Makkah, not the Noble Companions.
To imply this includes Sahabah or the Prophet ﷺ is a misinterpretation, as it contradicts other Qur'anic verses and Hadith.

Allah Almighty says:
"O Beloved! We have bestowed upon you abundant good" (Surah Kawthar, 108:1),
and:
"To whom Allah bestowed a favour and you had bestowed a favour" (Surah As-Saffat, 37:37).

The Holy Prophet ﷺ has been granted the keys to the treasures of the earth, and he will indeed intercede on the Day of Judgement.
So to say he owns nothing or is of no benefit (May Allah forbid) contradicts the Qur'an and Sunnah.

Ibn-Kathir

13. He merges the night into the day, and He merges the day into the night. And He has subjected the sun and the moon, each runs its course for a term appointed. Such is Allah, your Lord; His is the kingdom. And those, whom you invoke or call upon instead of Him, own not even a Qitmir. 14. If you invoke them, they hear not your call; and if (in case) they were to hear, they could not grant it to you. And on the Day of Resurrection, they will disown your worshipping them. And none can inform you like Him Who is the All-Knower.

The gods of the Idolators do not even own a Qitmir

Another aspect of His perfect power and might is that He has subjugated the night with its darkness and the day with its light. He takes from the length of the one and adds it to the shortness of the other, until they become equal. Then He takes from the latter and adds to the former, so one becomes long and the other becomes short, so they take from one another in summer and in winter.

(And He has subjected the sun and the moon,) and the stars and planets, with their light. All of them run in their appointed courses and in the manner prescribed for them, as decreed by the Almighty, All-Knowing.

each runs its course for a term appointed. means, until the Day of Resurrection.

Such is Alla0h, your Lord؟ means, the One Who has done all this is the Almighty Lord besides Whom there is no other true God.

(And those, whom you invoke or call upon instead of Him,) means, `the idols and false gods whom you claim to be in the form of angels who are close to Allah,’

own not even a Qitلm0r. Ibn Abba0s, may Alla0h be pleased with him, Muja0hid, Ikrimah, Ata0 , Atلiyah Al- Awfi, Al-Hلasan, Qata0dah and others said, This is the thread that is attached to the pit of a date. In other words, they do not possess anything in the heavens or on earth, not even anything equivalent to this Qitلm0r. Then Alla0h says:

(If you invoke them, they hear not your call;) means, `the gods upon whom you call instead of Allah, do not hear your supplication, because they are inanimate and have no soul in them.’

(and if (in case) they were to hear, they could not grant it to you.) means, `they are not able to do any of the things that you ask them for.’

And on the Day of Resurrection, they will disown your worshipping them means, `they will disown you.’ This is like the Ayat:

(And who is more astray than one who calls on besides Allah, such as will not answer him till the Day of Resurrection, and who are (even) unaware of their calls to them And when mankind are gathered, they (false deities) will become their enemies and will deny their worshipping.) (46:5-6), and

(And they have taken gods besides Allah, that they might give them honor, power and glory. Nay, but they will deny their worship of them, and become opponents to them.) (19:81-82)

(And none can inform you like Him Who is the All-Knower.) means, no one can tell you about the consequences of things and how they will end like the One Who is the All-Knower of them. Qatadah said, “He is referring to Himself, may He be blessed and exalted, for He undoubtedly tells the truth.”

(35:13) He causes the night to phase into the day and the day into the night,[30] and He has subjected the sun and the moon, each running its course to an appointed term.[31] That is Allah, your Lord; to Him belongs the Kingdom; but those whom you call upon, apart from Allah, possess not so much as the skin of a date-stone.[32]

Ala-Maududi

(35:13) He causes the night to phase into the day and the day into the night,[30] and He has subjected the sun and the moon, each running its course to an appointed term.[31] That is Allah, your Lord; to Him belongs the Kingdom; but those whom you call upon, apart from Allah, possess not so much as the skin of a date-stone.[32]

30. That is, the light of the day starts diminishing and the darkness of the night increasing gradually so as to cover up everything completely. Likewise, towards the end of the night, in the beginning, a streak of the light appears on the horizon, and then the bright day dawns.

31. “Subjected “: means subjected to a law.

32. The word qitmir in the original means the thin skin that covers the stone of the date fruit; but what is meant to be said is that the gods of the mushriks do not own anything whatever. That is why we have translated it “a blade of grass”, which is an insignificant thing.

(13) He causes the night to enter the day, and He causes the day to enter the night and has subjected the sun and the moon - each running [its course] for a specified term. That is Allāh, your Lord; to Him belongs sovereignty. And those whom you invoke other than Him do not possess [as much as] the membrane of a date seed.
