📖 Commentary of Surah Ghafir – Verse 48

"Those who were boastful will say: 'We are all [127] in it.' Surely, Allah has already judged between His servants [128]."

✅ [127] Admission of Shared Punishment

In this response, the arrogant leaders acknowledge their helplessness, saying in effect: “We are all equally engulfed in the Fire. How could we help you?” This highlights the shared misery and utter powerlessness of all those in Hell—regardless of rank, influence, or past authority. No one will have the capacity to relieve another's suffering.

✅ [128] Finality of Divine Judgment

This portion confirms that Allah’s decision is final and irreversible. Once the decree has been made—assigning Paradise to the believers and Hell to the disbelievers—no appeal or intercession will change it. Unlike worldly suffering that may ease over time, the punishment of Hell does not diminish. The torment remains constant and everlasting, and the false hopes of mercy from leaders will completely vanish.

Ibn-Kathir

The tafsir of Surah Muminun verse 48 by Ibn Kathir is unavailable here.
Please refer to Surah Muminun ayat 47 which provides the complete commentary from verse 47 through 50.

(40:48) Those who had waxed proud will reply: “All of us are in it. Allah has already passed His judgement among His servants.”[65]

Ala-Maududi

(40:48) Those who had waxed proud will reply: “All of us are in it. Allah has already passed His judgement among His servants.”[65]

65. That is, both you and we have already been sentenced and Allah has passed His judgment regarding each of us. Now it does not lie in anyone’s power to change the sentence of Allah, or to make any increase or decrease in the punishment awarded by Him.

(48) Those who had been arrogant will say, "Indeed, all [of us] are in it. Indeed, Allāh has judged between the servants."
