📖 Commentary of Surah Luqman – Verse 24

"We shall allow them to enjoy a little [54], then making them helpless. We shall drive them towards severe punishment [55]."

✅ [54] The Worthlessness of Worldly Enjoyment

This verse highlights that worldly luxury and enjoyment, no matter how lavish, is ultimately insignificant. As Allah says elsewhere: “Say you, the enjoyment of this world is little” (Surah Ibrahim 14:77).

When worldly blessings are disconnected from the Hereafter, they carry no real value. But if the world is used with an eye toward the Hereafter, then even a little becomes abundant and meaningful in Allah's sight.

✅ [55] The Meaning of Severe Punishment

This part refers specifically to the disbelievers, not sinful believers. While a sinful Muslim may be punished, it would not be of the severe nature described here.

Severe punishment in this verse can mean:

  • Everlasting torment,

  • Punishment marked by disgrace, or

  • Torment in the deepest and harshest regions of Hell.

If a believing sinner is cast into Hell, it will only be for a limited time, and that too, in the upper layers of Hell, where the punishment is comparatively lighter, if Allah wills.

This verse warns that temporary enjoyment should not deceive one into forgetfulness, for true accountability awaits in the Hereafter.
