📖 Commentary of Surah Muhammad – Verse 3

"This is because the infidels follow the falsehood [7], and believers follow the truth from their Lord [8]. Thus Allah narrates to mankind their descriptions [9]."

✅ 7. The Infidels Follow Falsehood

The disbelievers are described as followers of falsehood, which includes:

  • Following Satan

  • Being slaves to their carnal desires

  • Obeying evil leaders and misguided traditions

Because their path is disconnected from divine guidance, all their good deeds are rendered worthless in the Hereafter—just like an illusion.

✅ 8. The Believers Follow the Truth from Their Lord

In contrast, the believers walk on the path of truth which comprises:

  • The Qur’an

  • The Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ

  • The consensus (Ijma‘) of the Ummah

  • Qiyās (analogy) by qualified scholars

Moreover, the truth is embodied in the person of the Holy Prophet ﷺ—his every word and action reflects absolute truth. Just as light is linked with the sun and fragrance with a flower, the truth is inherently tied to the Messenger ﷺ.

✅ 9. Allah Distinguishes Between the Two Paths

Allah provides clear examples of both disbelievers and believers in the Qur’an so that:

  • People may learn from their consequences

  • They may avoid the destructive behavior of disbelievers

  • They may adopt the noble qualities of the true believers

This is a divine method of education and guidance, helping people identify and commit to the path of salvation.

Ibn-Kathir

The tafsir of Surah Muhammad verse 3 by Ibn Kathir is unavailable here.
Please refer to Surah Muhammad ayat 1 which provides the complete commentary from verse 1 through 3.

(47:3) That is because those who disbelieved followed falsehood whereas those who believed followed the Truth that came to them from their Lord. Thus does Allah set forth to people parables showing their true state.[7]

Ala-Maududi

(47:3) That is because those who disbelieved followed falsehood whereas those who believed followed the Truth that came to them from their Lord. Thus does Allah set forth to people parables showing their true state.[7]

7. That is, He makes both the parties aware of their positions. One party insists on following falsehood; therefore, Allah has brought all its endeavors to naught. And the other party has adopted obedience of the Truth; therefore, Allah has purified it of its evils and corrected its condition.

(3) That is because those who disbelieve follow falsehood, and those who believe follow the truth from their Lord. Thus does Allāh present to the people their comparisons.[1493]

[1493]- So that they may know the results of their choice.
