The Duty of Worship and Service to Allah

  1. Obligation to Worship the Lord of the Ka'bah:

    • The Quraish of Makkah were revered because they served the Holy Ka'bah.
    • Therefore, it became their duty to worship the Lord of the Ka'bah (Allah Almighty).
    • This lesson applies to all those whom Allah grants religious honor, like scholars, religious guides, and Sayyeds. They must serve religion and remain loyal to the Holy Prophet, as they benefit from his name.
  2. Context of the Surah:

    • This Surah is Makkan, revealed before the obligation of acts like Salaah and Fasting were established (likely before the event of Me'raaj).
    • The worship mentioned here refers to reciting the names of Allah and the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, such as reciting the Kalimah.
    • Seeing the blessed face of the Holy Prophet ﷺ with love is considered the first and most superior act of worship.

Key Lessons and Issues Derived:

  1. Infidels' Obligation to Worship:

    • Even the infidels are obligated to worship Allah.
    • They should accept Islam and perform the required worships.
  2. Worship in the State of Infidelity:

    • Acts of worship performed in the state of infidelity are not true acts of worship.
    • The infidels of Makkah used to perform Tawaaf, Hajj, and Umrah, and serve the pilgrims, but these acts were rendered null and void due to their state of disbelief.
  3. The Sacred Ka'bah:

    • The Ka'bah is the manifestation of Divine splendour and holds special significance in Islam.
  4. Linking Divine Majesty to Creation:

    • While Allah is the Lord of all beings, His divinity should be linked with His lofty creation.
    • Thus, one should invoke: "O Lord of Mustapha (the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ), O Lord of the Sacred Ka'bah."
  5. Sacred Nature of the Ka'bah and the Qur'an:

    • Though the Ka'bah is built from stones and other materials, it is not like other buildings.
    • Similarly, although the Qur'an is printed on paper with ink like any other book, its significance and nature are incomparable.
    • Even though the Prophets eat and drink, they are not like regular humans in their essence and divine status.

Ala-Maududi

(106:3) therefore, let them worship the Lord of this House;[3]

3. This House: the Holy Kabah. The sentence means that the Quraish have attained to this blessing only by virtue of the House of Allah. They themselves acknowledge that the 360 idols, which they worship, are not its lord, but Allah alone is its Lord. He alone saved them from the invasion of the army of elephants. Him alone they had invoked for help against Abrahah’s army. It was His House the keeping of which enhanced their rank and position in Arabia, for before that they were dispersed and commanded no position whatever. Like the common Arab tribes, they too were scattered factions of a race. But when they rallied round this House in Makkah and began to serve it, they became, honorable throughout Arabia, and their trade caravans began to visit every part of the country fearlessly. Therefore, whatever they have achieved, it has been possible only by the help of the Lord of this House; therefore, they should worship Him alone.

(3) Let them worship the Lord of this House,[1998]

[1998]- i.e., the Kaʿbah.
