📖 Commentary of Surah Yusuf – Verse 22

"And when he reached his full strength [45], We bestowed upon him wisdom and knowledge [46]. And thus We reward those who do good."

✅ 45. Reaching Full Strength

This verse refers to Hazrat Yusuf (on whom be peace) reaching the prime of his life. In the context of the time, the prime of life began at the age of eighteen and continued until forty. From forty to sixty years, individuals were considered to be in middle age, while sixty to one hundred years was regarded as old age. During these days, people were blessed with longer lifespans, and reaching full strength in the case of Hazrat Yusuf (on whom be peace) is understood to signify twenty years of age, marking the peak of physical strength and maturity.

✅ 46. Bestowed Wisdom and Knowledge

Allah Almighty granted Hazrat Yusuf (on whom be peace) with inspired knowledge, teaching him directly without the need for worldly learning in jurisprudence or pious actions. Prophethood is characterized by this type of inspired knowledge, as seen with Hazrat Khizr (on whom be peace), of whom it is said: "And We bestowed upon him Our inspired knowledge" (S18:V65).

Similarly, Allah says about our Holy Prophet ﷺ: "And He has taught you what you did not know" (S4:V113), and "The Most Affectionate, Taught the QUR'AN to His Beloved" (S55:V1-2).

This highlights the distinction between worldly knowledge, which is learned from teachers, and the knowledge of the Prophets, which is divinely imparted by Allah Almighty. No worldly scholar can match the knowledge of a Prophet, as the latter are the students of Allah Almighty, who bestows upon them knowledge that transcends ordinary learning.

The tafsir of Surah Yusuf verse 22 by Ibn Kathir is unavailable here.
Please refer to Surah Yusuf ayat 21 which provides the complete commentary from verse 21 through 22.

(12:22) And when Joseph reached the age of maturity, We granted him judgement and knowledge.[20] Thus do We reward those who do good.

Ala-Maududi

(12:22) And when Joseph reached the age of maturity, We granted him judgement and knowledge.[20] Thus do We reward those who do good.

20. By the use of such words as the Quran usually means, We bestowed on him Prophethood, for the Arabic word hukmun stands for both judgment and authority and ilmun stands for that knowledge which is directly revealed to the Prophets by Allah. Thus, the Arabic words of the text will mean: We gave him the power and the authority and the knowledge needed for judging rightly the affairs of the people.

(22) And when he [i.e., Joseph] reached maturity, We gave him judgement and knowledge. And thus We reward the doers of good.
