📖 Commentary of Surah Yaseen – Verse 31

"Have they not seen [45] that how many generations before them We have destroyed? Surely they are not to return to them [46]."

✅ [45] Ignoring the Lessons of History

The disbelievers of Makkah, during their trade and travel, had passed by the ruins of many ancient civilizations—nations that were destroyed due to their defiance of divine guidance. Yet, despite witnessing these ruins with their own eyes, they failed to reflect or take any meaningful lesson from the past.

This neglect shows how arrogance and heedlessness can blind people, even when signs are visible before them.

✅ [46] Denial of Reincarnation and Value of Life

The statement “Surely they are not to return to them” clearly refutes the false belief in reincarnation. Once a generation has passed, they do not return to this world—not even for the purpose of performing good deeds.

This also invalidates the doctrine of raj‘ah (return) held by some Shia sects, who believe personalities like Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) will return before the Day of Judgment. Such claims contradict the clear Qur'anic stance stated in this verse.

Instead, this verse reminds us that our current life is a divine opportunity. We should seize it to do good, because once it ends, there is no return to correct our mistakes.

Ibn-Kathir

The tafsir of Surah Yaseen verse 31 by Ibn Kathir is unavailable here.
Please refer to Surah Yaseen ayat 30 which provides the complete commentary from verse 30 through 32.

(36:31) Have they not seen how many nations before them did We destroy? Thereafter they never came back to them.[25]

Ala-Maududi

(36:31) Have they not seen how many nations before them did We destroy? Thereafter they never came back to them.[25]

25. That is, they were annihilated so completely that not a trace of them was left behind them. No one in the world even remembers them today. Their civilization as well as their race has become extinct.

(31) Have they not considered how many generations We destroyed before them - that they to them[1265] will not return?

[1265]- i.e., to those living presently in the world.
