"And We have set a barrier before them and a barrier behind them and covered them from above. Therefore, they see nothing. [9]"
This verse describes the state of those who persistently reject guidance: they are surrounded by barriers on all sides—from the front, from behind, and above, leaving them spiritually blind and unable to perceive the truth.
The barriers mentioned are not physical walls, but rather signs of inner obstruction. Their arrogance, denial, and hatred for the truth form invisible veils around their hearts and minds. As a result, even though they are alive and hear the message, they are unable to comprehend or benefit from it.
The phrase "they see nothing" emphasizes the extent of their blindness. Despite witnessing miracles and hearing the Qur'an, they remain unmoved, as if their sight, hearing, and hearts are sealed.
This verse is closely tied to the previous one. Just as the chains around their necks prevent them from looking up, the barriers around them prevent them from moving forward in faith. It portrays a complete spiritual paralysis caused by their own persistent disbelief.

Please refer to Surah Yaseen ayat 8 which provides the complete commentary from verse 8 through 12.
(36:9) and We have put a barrier before them and a barrier behind them, and have covered them up, so they are unable to see.[7]
7. Setting a barrier before them and a barrier behind them, means that the natural result of their stubbornness and pride is that they neither learn any lesson from their past history nor ever consider the consequences of the future. Their prejudices have so covered them from every side and their misconceptions have so blinded them that they cannot see even those glaring realities which are visible to every right-thinking and unbiased person.
