📖 Commentary of Surah Yunus – Verse 108

"Please declare: 'O people! The truth has come from your Lord [276]. So whoever is guided is only guided for himself [277], and whoever goes astray, goes astray only to his own loss [278]. And I am not a guardian over you [279].'"

✅ [276] The Benefit of Guidance

This verse emphasizes that guidance benefits the individual who follows it, and it is their personal gain. Even though others, such as parents, may benefit from the guidance of their children, the true benefit is for the individual themselves. It highlights that the message of guidance is meant for the individual to benefit from, and it cannot be forced upon anyone. The verse also signifies that the Prophet's exhortations will either be beneficial or harmful for him based on how they are received.

✅ [277] Personal Responsibility for Misguidance

The verse teaches that the misguided will face the consequences of their actions, as misguidance leads to personal loss. While others, including negligent parents, may also suffer from the misguidance of their family members, the individual will be held accountable for their own deviation from the truth. This responsibility is individual, and Allah warns to "save yourselves and your family from the Fire" (S66:V6).

✅ [278] The Prophet’s Independence

This verse clarifies that the misguidance of people is not the responsibility of the Prophet (PBUH). The Prophet will not be questioned about their actions, and he is not accountable for their heresy. Allah states in "And you shall not question about the inmates of Hell" (S2:V119). This highlights the Prophet’s independence from the deeds of others, illustrating that he is not dependent on the actions of his followers, but rather, they are dependent on him for guidance.

✅ [279] The Prophet’s Role in Delivering the Message

The Prophet (PBUH) is not a guardian over his people, meaning that it is not his responsibility to force them to believe or follow the guidance. He is only a conveyor of the message. This applies to both the absolute revelation (the Qur'an and Hadith) and the interpretations he made regarding religious laws. He acted on these interpretations and instructed jurists to do the same. The Prophet’s role was to deliver Allah's guidance, but he is not responsible for the outcome, emphasizing his independence in fulfilling his mission.

Ibn-Kathir

108. Say: “O people! Now the truth has come to you from your Lord. So whoever receives guidance, he does so for the good of himself. And whoever goes astray, he does so at his own loss. And I am not set over you as a guardian. 109. And follow what is revealed to you, and be patient until Allah gives judgment. And He is the best of the judges.) Allah, the Exalted, commands His Messenger to inform the people that that which he has brought them from Allah is the truth. It is a message concerning which there is no doubt or suspicion. Therefore, whoever is guided by it and follows it, then he only benefits himself by doing so. Likewise, whoever is misguided away from this message, then he will suffer the consequences against his own self.

﴿وَمَآ أَنَاْ عَلَيْكُمْ بِوَكِيلٍ﴾

(And I am not set over you as a guardian) This means, `I am not a guardian over you in order for you to become believers. I am only a warner to you and guidance belongs to Allah, the Exalted.’ Concerning Allah’s statement,

﴿وَاتَّبِعْ مَا يُوحَى إِلَيْكَ وَاصْبِرْ﴾

(And follow what has been revealed to you, and be patient) This means, `Adhere to that which Allah has revealed to you, and inspired you with, and be patient with the opposition that you meet from the people.’

﴿حَتَّى يَحْكُمَ اللَّهُ﴾

(until Allah gives judgment) This means, `Until Allah judges between you and them.’

﴿وَهُوَ خَيْرُ الْحَـكِمِينَ﴾

(And He is the best of judges. ) This means that He is the best of those who pass judgment, due to His Justice and His wisdom.

(10:108) Tell them (O Muhammad): ‘Men! Truth has come to you from your Lord. Whosoever, then, follows the true guidance does so for his own good; and whosoever strays, his straying will be to his own hurt. I am no custodian over you.
