45. And seek help through patience and prayer. And without doubt, prayer is difficult but to those who are humble and God-fearing

Let me delve into the profound meaning of this verse from the Quran, which beautifully combines the concepts of patienceprayer, and the qualities of the humble and God-fearing.

Seeking Help through Patience and Prayer

The verse you’ve quoted is from Surah Al-Baqarah (Chapter 2), specifically Ayah 45. It imparts a powerful message about seeking assistance in times of difficulty. Let’s break it down:

  1. “وَٱسۡتَعِينُواْ بِٱلصَّبۡرِ وَٱلصَّلَوٰةِ” (Wasta’eenoo bissabri was Salaah):
    • “وَٱسۡتَعِينُواْ” (Wasta’eenoo): This verb comes from the root “عِون” (‘awn), which means “to seek help” or “to assist.” It emphasizes that we should actively seek help.
    • “بِٱلصَّبۡرِ وَٱلصَّلَوٰةِ” (bissabri was Salaah): Here, two essential tools are mentioned:
      • “ٱلصَّبۡرِ” (sabr): Patience, endurance, and steadfastness. It’s the ability to remain calm and composed during trials and tribulations.
      • “ٱلصَّلَوٰةِ” (Salaah): Prayer, the direct communication with Allah. It’s a means to seek guidance, solace, and strength.
  2. “وَإِنَّهَا لَكَبِيرَةٌ إِلَّا عَلَى ٱلۡخَٰشِعِينَ” (wa innahaa lakabee ratun illaa alal khaashi’een):
    • “وَإِنَّهَا لَكَبِيرَةٌ” (wa innahaa lakabee ratun): “Indeed, it is difficult.” The word “كَبِيرَةٌ” (kabeerah) signifies something immense or significant.
    • “إِلَّا عَلَى ٱلۡخَٰشِعِينَ” (illaa alal khaashi’een): “Except for those who are humble.” The humble, God-fearing individuals find prayer less burdensome.

The Essence of Patience

  • Patience (sabr) is multifaceted:
    • It involves enduring hardships without complaint.
    • It’s not passive; it’s active resilience.
    • Patience during adversity is a form of worship.
    • It’s a recognition that Allah’s plan is beyond our understanding.

The Power of Prayer

  • Prayer (Salaah) is our direct connection with Allah:
    • It’s a conversation where we pour out our hearts.
    • It’s a refuge when life overwhelms us.
    • It’s a reminder of our dependence on the Divine.
    • It’s a source of tranquility and guidance.

The Humble and God-Fearing

  • “ٱلۡخَٰشِعِينَ” (alal khaashi’een): These are the ones who approach prayer with:
    • Humility: Recognizing their insignificance before Allah.
    • Fear: Not fear of punishment, but awe and reverence.
    • Submission: Surrendering their will to the Divine.

Traditions / Hadith Related to the above verse.

Let’s explore some traditions (hadith) related to patience and prayer. These teachings from the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) provide valuable insights into the significance of these virtues:

  1. Hadith from Sahih Muslim:
    • Abu Malik Al-Harith bin Asim Al-Ash’ari (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said:

“Purity is half of faith, and the praise of Allah fills the scale. Glorification and praise fill up what is between the heavens and the earthPrayer is a light, charity is proof, and patience is illumination. The Quran is a proof for you or against you. All people go out early in the morning and sell themselves, either setting themselves free or ruining themselves.” 1

  2. Quranic Verse on Patience:
    • In Surat Al-‘A`raf (Chapter 7), verse 128, Allah says:

“Said Moses to his people, ‘Seek help through Allah and be patient. Indeed, the earth belongs to Allah. He causes to inherit it whom He wills of His servants. And the [best] outcome is for the righteous.’”

      • This verse emphasizes seeking help through patience and recognizing that Allah’s ultimate plan prevails. Patience is rewarded, and Allah does not allow the good deeds of the patient to go unrewarded
  3. Additional Hadith:
    • Another beautiful hadith states:

“Amazing is the believer, for whatever Allah decrees for him, it is better for him! If he is tested with a bounty, he is grateful for it, and this is better for him; and if he is afflicted with a hardship, he is patient with it, and this is better for him.

In summary, patience (sabr) and prayer (Salaah) are intertwined. Patience illuminates our path, and prayer serves as a light guiding us toward Allah. May we find strength in both and seek His help in all circumstances.
