Summary/Theme of Surah Al-An'am

Surah Al-An'am, revealed in Mecca, emphasizes the Oneness of God (Tawhid). Throughout the chapter, the name of Allah is mentioned seventy times, with a strong condemnation of idolatry and polytheism. The surah serves as a reminder of God's sovereignty and the importance of adhering to monotheism.

Lessons Learned from Surah Al-An'am

  1. Historical Precedents: Allah has sent many nations before us; those who disbelieved faced His punishment and were replaced by others.
  2. Consequences of Mockery: Those who mock Allah’s punishments will ultimately face the same consequences they mocked.
  3. Day of Judgement: All disputes in this world will be clarified on the Day of Judgement.
  4. Human Nature: People often turn to Allah in times of difficulty but neglect Him once relief comes.
  5. Majority Influence: Following the majority may lead one astray from the right path.
  6. Abstinence from Sin: All forms of sin should be avoided.
  7. Prophethood: Allah is the best judge of who deserves prophethood.
  8. Provision for Offspring: Do not harm your children out of fear of poverty; Allah is their Sustainer.
  9. Honesty in Transactions: Deceit in measuring and weighing is condemned.
  10. Blessings of the Quran: Practicing the Quran brings Allah’s Mercy.
  11. Reward System: Every good deed is rewarded tenfold, while a sin is only recompensed with its equivalent.
  12. Divine Testing: Allah has created some individuals of higher rank than others to test them with their blessings.

Benefits of Reciting Surah Al-An'am

  1. Spiritual Blessings: Writing Surah Al-An'am in musk or saffron and drinking it for six consecutive days will bring blessings and relief from ailments.
  2. Angelic Intercession: Reciting this surah attracts the prayers of seventy thousand angels who glorified Allah upon its revelation, seeking forgiveness for the reciter until the Day of Judgement.
  3. Fulfillment of Desires: For the fulfillment of legitimate desires, perform a four-unit prayer (Salat) with Surah Al-Fatihah and Surah Al-An'am in each unit, followed by specific supplications.
  4. Rewards of Worship: Reciting Surah Al-An'am up to the verse "taksibun" brings the reward of worship equal to that of forty thousand angels until the Day of Judgement. The same reward applies to those who recite it in the morning.

Special Supplication

After reciting Surah Al-An'am, the following invocation can be made to seek fulfillment of legitimate desires:

  • YA SAMI AL DU-A-I
  • YA MAN LA TUGHAYYIRUTUL AYYAMU WAL LAYLI
  • SALLI ALA MUHAMMADIN WA ALI MUHAMMAD
  • WARHAM ZAFI WA FAQRI WA FAQATI WA MASKANATI
  • FA INNAK ALAMU BIHA MINNI
  • WA ANTA ALAMU HAJATI
  • YA MAN RAHIMA SHAYKHA YAQUBA RADDA
  • ALAYHI YUSUFA QURRATA AYNIHI
  • YA MAN RAHIMA AYYUBA BADA HULULI BALA-IHI
  • YA MAN RAHIMA MUHAMMADAN ALAYHI WA ALIHIS SALAMU
  • WA MANIL YATIMA AWAHU
  • WA NASARAHU ALA JABABIRATI QURAYSH WA TAWAGHITIHA WA AMKANAHU MIN HUM
  • YA MUGHITHU YA MUGHITHU YA MUGHITHU

Through sincere invocation, one can beseech Allah to fulfill their legitimate desires, trusting that He will respond positively.

بِسۡمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحۡمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

 

وَهُوَ ٱلۡقَاهِرُ فَوۡقَ عِبَادِهِۦۖ وَيُرۡسِلُ عَلَيۡكُمۡ حَفَظَةً حَتَّىٰٓ إِذَا جَآءَ أَحَدَكُمُ ٱلۡمَوۡتُ تَوَفَّتۡهُ رُسُلُنَا وَهُمۡ لَا يُفَرِّطُونَ

Transliteration:( Wa huwal qaahiru fawqa 'ibaadihee wa yursilu 'alaikum hafazatan hattaaa izaa jaaa'a ahadakumul mawtu tawaffathu rusulunaa wa hum laa yufarritoon )
61. And He is the Supreme over His bondsmen, and He sends guardians over you [123], until when death comes to any of you, Our messengers [angels] take his soul [124], and they do not fail [125].

ثُمَّ رُدُّوٓاْ إِلَى ٱللَّهِ مَوۡلَىٰهُمُ ٱلۡحَقِّۚ أَلَا لَهُ ٱلۡحُكۡمُ وَهُوَ أَسۡرَعُ ٱلۡحَٰسِبِينَ

Transliteration:( Summa ruddooo ilallaahi mawlaahumul haqq; alaa lahul hukmu wa Huwa asra'ul haasibeen )
62. Then they are returned back [126] to Allah, their true Lord. His is the command, and He is the quickest in taking account [127]..

قُلۡ مَن يُنَجِّيكُم مِّن ظُلُمَٰتِ ٱلۡبَرِّ وَٱلۡبَحۡرِ تَدۡعُونَهُۥ تَضَرُّعٗا وَخُفۡيَةٗ لَّئِنۡ أَنجَىٰنَا مِنۡ هَٰذِهِۦ لَنَكُونَنَّ مِنَ ٱلشَّـٰكِرِينَ

Transliteration:( Qul mai yunajjeekum min zulumaatil barri walbahri tad'oonahoo tadarru'anw wa khufyatal la'in anjaanaa min haazihee lanakoonanna minash shaakireen )
63. Say, "Who delivers you from the darkness of the land and the sea, when you call upon Him in humility and secretly [128], saying, 'If He saves us from this, we shall certainly be among the grateful'?"

قُلِ ٱللَّهُ يُنَجِّيكُم مِّنۡهَا وَمِن كُلِّ كَرۡبٖ ثُمَّ أَنتُمۡ تُشۡرِكُونَ

Transliteration:( Qulil laahu yunajjjeekum minhaa wa min kulli karbin summa antum tushrikoon )
64. Say, "Allah delivers you from this and from every distress, yet you associate partners with Him [129]."

قُلۡ هُوَ ٱلۡقَادِرُ عَلَىٰٓ أَن يَبۡعَثَ عَلَيۡكُمۡ عَذَابٗا مِّن فَوۡقِكُمۡ أَوۡ مِن تَحۡتِ أَرۡجُلِكُمۡ أَوۡ يَلۡبِسَكُمۡ شِيَعٗا وَيُذِيقَ بَعۡضَكُم بَأۡسَ بَعۡضٍۗ ٱنظُرۡ كَيۡفَ نُصَرِّفُ ٱلۡأٓيَٰتِ لَعَلَّهُمۡ يَفۡقَهُونَ

Transliteration:( Qul huwal Qaadiru 'alaaa ai yab'asa 'alaikum 'azaabam min fawqikum aw min tahti arjulikum aw yalbisakum shiya'anw wa yuzeeqa ba'dakum ba'sa ba'd; unzur kaifa nusarriful Aayaati la'allahum yafqahoon )
65. Say, "He is powerful to send punishment upon you from above you, or from beneath your feet, or to divide you into factions and make you taste [130] the violence of one another." See how We explain the signs in various ways so that they may understand? [131].

وَكَذَّبَ بِهِۦ قَوۡمُكَ وَهُوَ ٱلۡحَقُّۚ قُل لَّسۡتُ عَلَيۡكُم بِوَكِيلٖ

Transliteration:( Wa kaz zaba bihee qawmuka wa huwal haqq; qul lastu'alaikum biwakeel )
66. And your people have denied it, though it is the truth. Say, "I am not a guardian over you" [132].

لِّكُلِّ نَبَإٖ مُّسۡتَقَرّٞۚ وَسَوۡفَ تَعۡلَمُونَ

Transliteration:( Likulli naba im mustaqar runw wa sawfa ta'lamoon )
67. For everything, there is a fixed time, and soon you will come to know.

وَإِذَا رَأَيۡتَ ٱلَّذِينَ يَخُوضُونَ فِيٓ ءَايَٰتِنَا فَأَعۡرِضۡ عَنۡهُمۡ حَتَّىٰ يَخُوضُواْ فِي حَدِيثٍ غَيۡرِهِۦۚ وَإِمَّا يُنسِيَنَّكَ ٱلشَّيۡطَٰنُ فَلَا تَقۡعُدۡ بَعۡدَ ٱلذِّكۡرَىٰ مَعَ ٱلۡقَوۡمِ ٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ

Transliteration:( Wa izaa ra aital lazeena yakhoodoona feee Aayaatinaa fa a'rid 'anhum hattaa yakkhoodoo fee hadeesin ghairih; wa immaa yunsiyannakash Shaitaanu falaa taq'ud ba'dazzikraa ma'al qawmiz zaalimeen )
68. And when you see those who engage in idle talk about Our signs, then turn away [133] from them until they engage in some other discourse [134]. And if Satan causes you to forget [135], then do not sit after remembering with the unjust people [136].

وَمَا عَلَى ٱلَّذِينَ يَتَّقُونَ مِنۡ حِسَابِهِم مِّن شَيۡءٖ وَلَٰكِن ذِكۡرَىٰ لَعَلَّهُمۡ يَتَّقُونَ

Transliteration:( Wa maa 'alal lazeena yattaqoona min hisaabihim min shai'inw wa laakin zikraa la'allahum yattaqoon )
69. And there is no account for the righteous people, but [it is] a reminder, so that perhaps they may be mindful [137].

وَذَرِ ٱلَّذِينَ ٱتَّخَذُواْ دِينَهُمۡ لَعِبٗا وَلَهۡوٗا وَغَرَّتۡهُمُ ٱلۡحَيَوٰةُ ٱلدُّنۡيَاۚ وَذَكِّرۡ بِهِۦٓ أَن تُبۡسَلَ نَفۡسُۢ بِمَا كَسَبَتۡ لَيۡسَ لَهَا مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ وَلِيّٞ وَلَا شَفِيعٞ وَإِن تَعۡدِلۡ كُلَّ عَدۡلٖ لَّا يُؤۡخَذۡ مِنۡهَآۗ أُوْلَـٰٓئِكَ ٱلَّذِينَ أُبۡسِلُواْ بِمَا كَسَبُواْۖ لَهُمۡ شَرَابٞ مِّنۡ حَمِيمٖ وَعَذَابٌ أَلِيمُۢ بِمَا كَانُواْ يَكۡفُرُونَ

Transliteration:( Wa zaril lazeenat takhazoo deenahum la'ibanwwa lahwanw wa gharrat humul ha yaatud dunyaa; wa zakkir biheee an tubsala nafsum bimaa kasabat laisa lahaa min doonil laahi waliyyunw wa laa shafee'unw wa in ta'dil kulla 'adlil laa yu'khaz minhaa; ulaaa 'ikal lazeena ubsiloo bimaa kasaboo lahum sharaabum min hameeminw wa 'azaabun aleemum bimaa kaanoo yakkfuroon )
70. And leave alone those who have taken their religion as a mockery and a plaything [138], and the life of this world has deceived them. And remind them [139] with the Qur'an, so that a soul may not be seized for what it has earned. It will have no protector or intercessor besides Allah [140], and if it offers every compensation (for its wrong deeds), it will not be accepted by it. These are the ones who will be seized for what they have earned [141]. They will have a drink of boiling water and a painful punishment, because of their disbelief [142].

Tawhid is highly emphasized in this Surah. It contains the basic principles of Tawhid. It provides beautiful descriptions of Allah's creative power. It criticizes Shirk and its manifestations.
