The Summary/Theme of Surah Al-Araf

Al-Araf is one of the most detailed Surahs about the origins of creation and revealing prophecies about the Day of Judgment. In the beginning, it describes how Satan forced Adam and Eve to leave Heaven, and they all came down to Earth. From that point on, Satan became humanity's greatest enemy.

Lessons Learned from Surah Al-Araf

  1. Our actions will be weighed on the Day of Judgment, and if the scale of good outweighs the bad, we will have succeeded; otherwise, we will be losers.
  2. Trying to expose someone’s private parts is a satanic act; it is the very motive Shaytan had in convincing Adam and Hawwa to eat from the forbidden tree.
  3. Clothes are a blessing from Allah.
  4. We should dress well when going to the Masjid.
  5. Don’t be extravagant.
  6. There will be no malice in the hearts of the people of Jannah.
  7. Regularly make this du'a:
    وَأَلْقِيَتِ الْمَسَائِلُ إِلَىٰ اللَّهِ حَفِيظًا مَّصُونًا
O Allah! Pour upon us patience, and take our souls with Islam.
  8. Sometimes, we have to control our emotions and look at the bigger picture.
  9. Imagine the relationship Musa had with Allah, when Allah punished the Banu Isra'il, Musa interceded saying, “If You so wished, You could have destroyed them and myself. Will You destroy us due to the actions of the foolish among us? [After all] it is Your trial; You let astray whomsoever You wish, and guide whomsoever You wish. You are our guardian, so forgive us and have mercy upon us, for You are the best of the forgivers!”
  10. The Mercy of Allah encompasses everything.
  11. Allah tests us through good and bad, so that we can mend our ways.
  12. Allah does not let the actions of those who do good go to waste.
  13. When Shaytan whispers to you, recite ta'awwudh:
    أَعُوذُ بِاللَّهِ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ الرَّجِيمِ
  14. When the Quran is being recited, remain silent and listen attentively; this will lead to Allah showing mercy upon you.

Recitation & Benefits of Surah Al-Araf

There are countless benefits; we are sharing a few as below:

1) If you write Surah Al-Araf and wear it, then the wearer will be safe from enemies and wild animals. If you write this surah with rose water and saffron on paper and hang it around your neck, so long as it remains there, no carnivorous animal would touch you.

2) Recitation of Surah Al-Araf once a month will ensure you do not fear on the Day of Judgment (Qiyamah). Whoso recites this surah every month will be among those about whom verse 35 of this surah says: “No fear shall come upon them, nor shall they grieve.”

3) Those who recite Surah Al-Araf often will set a veil/curtain between Shaytan and the reciter.

4) If this surah is recited on Friday, the reciter will not be examined on the Day of Reckoning. This surah will be a witness for the reciter on that day, and Allah will hang a curtain between the reciter of this surah and Shaytan, treating him as one of the companions of Prophet Adam.

Surah Al-Araf, named after the "heights" mentioned in verse 46, is a captivating and profound chapter of the Quran that captures the essence of the Meccan period during the time of revelation. This surah intricately recounts the stories of earlier prophets who faced rejection and denial from their communities, ultimately leading to their destruction as a consequence of their disbelief. These narratives not only serve as reassurance for Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) but also act as a stark warning to his community about Allah’s impending torment should they persist in their path of disbelief.

Key Themes and Lessons

  1. Stories of the Prophets: The surah beautifully narrates the experiences of past prophets, emphasizing the importance of faith and obedience to Allah. It highlights the cyclical nature of divine guidance and the consequences of ignoring it.

  2. The Fall of Adam: Al-Araf includes an enthralling retelling of the temptation of Adam by Satan in Paradise, which led to their fall from grace. This account provides invaluable lessons for believers regarding vigilance against Satan's cunning whispers and constant temptations. It serves as a reminder for believers to remain steadfast in their faith and to actively guard themselves against deceptive influences along their spiritual journey.

  3. Descriptions of Paradise and Hellfire: The surah offers awe-inspiring imagery concerning Paradise and Hellfire, particularly in verses 36-53. Readers are vividly transported to realms beyond imagination, where eternal bliss awaits those who strive towards righteousness, while everlasting punishment looms over those who defiantly reject Allah’s guidance.

  4. Powerlessness of Idols: Throughout Al-Araf, the powerlessness of idols is emphasized. The surah highlights how those who worship these false deities are ultimately forsaken and powerless against divine punishment.
