The Summary/Theme of Surah Al-Mumtahanah:

Befriend not those who are enemies of Allah and Muslims. The Prophet Ibrahim (PBUH) and his companions are excellent examples for believers. The Surah was revealed after the Treaty of Hudaybiyah and before the conquest of Makkah.

Lessons Learned from Al-Mumtahanah:

  1. Do not befriend the enemies of Allah.
  2. Allah is most aware of what we conceal and what we make apparent.
  3. If Allah decides to punish you in the Hereafter due to your deeds, no relations or offspring can benefit you in any way.
  4. For us in Ibrahim (عليه السلام) is the best example in announcing innocence from the disbelievers and their disbelieving creed.
  5. Make this du'a often:
  6. ‘O our Rabb! In You alone we trust, and to You alone we turn for help, and to You is the final return. Our Rabb! Do not make us persecuted by those who disbelieve, and our Rabb! Forgive us, You, only You, are the All-Mighty, the All-Wise.’ (60:4-5)
  7. Allah does not prohibit doing good and justice to those who do not fight the Muslims.
  8. Allah only prohibits befriending those who fight the Muslims on the basis of their religion, exile them, or help others in doing so.

Transliteration:( Yaa ayyuhal lazeena aamanoo laa tattakhizoo 'aduwwee wa 'aduwaakum awliyaaa'a tulqoona ilaihim bilmawaddati wa qad kafaroo bima jaaa'akum minal haqq, yukhrijoonar Rasoola wa iyyaakum an tu'minoo billaahi rabbikum in kuntum kharajtum jihaadan fee sabeelee wabtighaaa'a mardaatee; tusirroona ilaihim bilma waddati wa ana a'alamu bimaaa akhfaitum wa maaa a'lantum; wa many yaf'alhu minkum faqad dalla sawaaa'as sabeel )
1.O believers! Do not take My enemy and your enemy as friends [1], would you offer them love while they deny what truth has come to you [2]; driving out the Messenger and yourselves because you believe in Allah as your Lord [3]? If you go out struggling hard in My Path and seeking My Pleasure [4], take them not as friends. You send them a secret message of love [5], while I know well what you conceal and what you reveal [6]. And whoever of you does this, has indeed gone astray from the Straight Path [7].

Transliteration:( Iny yasqafookum yakoonoo lakum a'daaa'anw wa yabsutooo ilaikum aydiyahum wa alsinatahum bissooo'i wa waddoo law takfuroon )
2. If they get the upper hand on you, they will become your enemies [9], and will stretch out their hands to you and their evil tongues with ardent desire that you become infidels [10].

Transliteration:( Lan tanfa'akum arhaamukum wa laaa awlaadukum; yawmal qiyaamati yafsilu bainakum; wallaahu bimaa ta'maloona baseer )
3. Neither your relationship would profit you, nor your children [11], on the Day of Resurrection. He will separate you from them [12]. And Allah Sees what you do.

Transliteration:( Qad kaanat lakum uswatun hasanatun feee Ibraaheema wallazeena ma'ahoo iz qaaloo liqawmihim innaa bura 'aaa'u minkum wa mimmaa ta'budoona min doonil laahi kafarnaa bikum wa badaa bainanaa wa bainakumul 'adaawatu wal baghdaaa'u abadan hattaa tu'minoo billaahi wahdahooo illaa qawla Ibraheema li abeehi la astaghfiranna laka wa maaa amliku laka minal laahi min shai; rabbanaa 'alaika tawakkalnaa wa ilaika anabnaa wa ilaikal maseer )
4.Indeed, there is a good model [13] for you in Ebrahim and those with him [14]. When they said to their people: "Indeed, we have nothing to do with you [15] and with that which you worship [16], except Allah. We reject all that you believe. Enmity and hatred have arisen between us and You forever [17], until you believe in [18] Allah alone." But what Ebrahim said to his father was: "I would certainly ask forgiveness [19] for you, so I have no authority [20] for any of your favours against Allah. O our Lord, we put our trust in You and to You do we turn and to You is our final return [21]."

Transliteration:( Rabbana laa taj'alnaa fitnatal lillazeena kafaroo waghfir lanaa rabbanaa innaka antal azeezul hakeem )
5.Our Lord, do not make us a trial [22] for those who do not believe, and forgive us. Our Lord, surely, You are the Most Honourable, the Most Wise.

Transliteration:( Laqad kaana lakum feehim uswatunhasanatul liman kaana yarjul laaha wal yawmal aakhir; wa many yatawalla fa innal laaha huwal ghaniyyul hameed )
6.Certainly, there is for you in them [23] a good model for him who has hope in Allah [24] and the Last Day. But, whoever turns [25] away, then indeed, Allah is Self-Sufficient, All Praised.

Transliteration:( Asal laahu any yaj'ala bainakum wa bainal lazeena 'aadaitum minhum mawaddah; wallahu qadeer; wallahu ghafoorur raheem )
7. It may be that Allah may bring about friendship [26] between you and those whom you hold to be your enemies among you. But Allah is All-Powerful and Allah is Forgiving, Merciful [27].

Transliteration:( Laa yanhaakumul laahu 'anil lazeena lam yuqaatilookum fid deeni wa lam yukhrijookum min diyaarikum an tabarroohum wa tuqsitooo ilaihim; innal laaha yuhibbul muqsiteen )
8.Allah does not forbid you to respect those who have not fought against you on account of (your) religion, and who have not expelled [28] you out of your homes, that you show them kindness and deal with them justly. Indeed, Allah loves [29] those who are just.

Transliteration:( Innamaa yanhaakumul laahu 'anil lazeena qaatalookum fid deeni wa akhrajookum min diyaarikum wa zaaharoo 'alaa ikhraajikum an tawallawhum; wa many yatawallahum fa ulaaa'ika humuz zaalimoon )
9. Allah only forbids you in respect of those who have fought against you on account of (your) religion [30] and expelled you from your home and backed (others) in your expulsion, that you befriend [31] them. And whoever makes friendship with them, those are the unjust [32].

Transliteration:( Yaaa ayyuhal lazeena aamanoo izaa jaaa'akumul mu'minaatu muhaajiraatin famtahinoo hunn; Allaahu a'lamu bi eemaani hinn; fa in 'alimtumoo hunna mu'minaatin falaa tarji'oo hunna ilal kuffaar; laa hunna hillul lahum wa laa hum yahilloona lahunna wa aatoohum maa anfaqoo wa laa junaaha 'alaikum an tankihoohunna izaaa aataitumoohunna ujoorahunn; wa laa tumsikoo bi 'isamil kawaafir; was'aloo maaa anfaqtum walyas'aloo maaa anfaqoo; zaalikum hukmul laahi yahkumu bainakum; wallaahu 'aleemun hakeem )
10. O believers! When believing women come to you as refugees, examine [33] them. Allah Knows best their faith [34]. Then if you find them to be true believers, do not send them back to the infidels [35]. Neither are these (women) lawful [36] for them, nor are they (men) lawful to these (women). And give their infidel husbands what they have spent [37]. And there is no blame on you if you marry [38] them when you pay them their dowries [39]. And hold not to them ties of marriage [40] with infidel women and ask back what you have spent, and the infidels should ask [41] for what they have spent [42]. This is the order of Allah. He judges between you, and Allah is All-Knowing, Wise.
