The Summary/Theme of Surah Al-Mumtahanah:

Befriend not those who are enemies of Allah and Muslims. The Prophet Ibrahim (PBUH) and his companions are excellent examples for believers. The Surah was revealed after the Treaty of Hudaybiyah and before the conquest of Makkah.

Lessons Learned from Al-Mumtahanah:

  1. Do not befriend the enemies of Allah.
  2. Allah is most aware of what we conceal and what we make apparent.
  3. If Allah decides to punish you in the Hereafter due to your deeds, no relations or offspring can benefit you in any way.
  4. For us in Ibrahim (عليه السلام) is the best example in announcing innocence from the disbelievers and their disbelieving creed.
  5. Make this du'a often:
  6. ‘O our Rabb! In You alone we trust, and to You alone we turn for help, and to You is the final return. Our Rabb! Do not make us persecuted by those who disbelieve, and our Rabb! Forgive us, You, only You, are the All-Mighty, the All-Wise.’ (60:4-5)
  7. Allah does not prohibit doing good and justice to those who do not fight the Muslims.
  8. Allah only prohibits befriending those who fight the Muslims on the basis of their religion, exile them, or help others in doing so.

Transliteration:( Wa in faatakum shai'un min azwaajikum ilal kuffaari fa 'aaqabtum fa aatul lazeena zahabat azwaajuhum misla maaa anfaqoo; wattaqul laahal lazeee antum bihee mu'minoon )
11. And if anyone from your wives goes away from the custody of believers to the infidels [43], then you punish the infidels. And give from the spoils of war [44] to those whose women have gone away, the like of that which they have spent (on such wives), and fear Allah in Whom you believe.

Transliteration:( Yaaa ayyuhan nabbiyyu izaa jaaa'akal mu'minaatu yubaayigh'naka 'alaaa allaa yushrikna billaahi shai 'anw wa laa yasriqna wa laa yazneena wa laa yaqtulna awlaadahunna wa laa ya'teena bibuhtaaniny yaftaree nahoo baina aydeehinna wa arjulihinna wa laa ya'seenaka fee ma'roofin fa baayigh' hunna wastaghfir lahunnalla hunn allaah; innallaaha ghafoorur raheem )
12. O Prophet! When believing women [45] come to you for taking an oath [46] of allegiance at your hands, that they shall not associate [47] anything with Allah, and that they will neither steal, nor commit adultery, nor will they kill [48] their children, nor bring a scandal [49] which they have forged [50] between their hands and feet (i.e., carrying it in their womb), and will not disobey [51] in what is right, then accept their allegiance, and ask forgiveness [52] for them from Allah. Undoubtedly, Allah is Forgiving, Merciful [53].

Transliteration:( Yaaa ayyuhal lazeena amanoo laa tatawallaw qawman ghadibal laahu 'alaihim qad ya'isoo minal aakhirati kamaa ya'isal kuffaaru min as haabil quboor )
13.O you who believe! Do not make friends with people with whom Allah is wrathful [54]. Indeed, they are in despair of the Hereafter, just as the infidels are in despair [55] of those who are in the graves.
