The summary/theme of the surah An-Nur

In response to the slander against Sayyidah Aisha, this Surah was revealed to strengthen the moral fiber of the Muslim community. A number of laws and guidance are given to reform the Muslim community: Rape, adultery, and fornication, all of which were already declared social crimes in Surah Al-Ahzab.

Lesson learned from surah An-Nur

  1. Don’t make unfounded accusations.  
  2. When you hear of slander or a false accusation, say: سبْحَانَكَ هَذَا بُهْتَانٌ عَظِيْم  
  3. Don’t spread rumours.  
  4. Don’t follow the footsteps of Shayá¹­'n.  
  5. Have a big heart and forgive those who have wronged you; Allah's will forgive you in return.  
  6. Learn the rules of seeking permission before entering a place; be it a house or a room.  
  7. Men should lower their gazes and safeguard their private parts.  
  8. Women should lower their gazes and safeguard their private parts.  
  9. Learn the rules of ḥij'b and implement them.  
  10. Allah's created every living thing from water.

بِسۡمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحۡمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

 

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ جَآءُو بِٱلۡإِفۡكِ عُصۡبَةٞ مِّنكُمۡۚ لَا تَحۡسَبُوهُ شَرّٗا لَّكُمۖ بَلۡ هُوَ خَيۡرٞ لَّكُمۡۚ لِكُلِّ ٱمۡرِيٕٖ مِّنۡهُم مَّا ٱكۡتَسَبَ مِنَ ٱلۡإِثۡمِۚ وَٱلَّذِي تَوَلَّىٰ كِبۡرَهُۥ مِنۡهُمۡ لَهُۥ عَذَابٌ عَظِيمٞ

Transliteration:( Innal lazeena jaaa'oo bilifki 'usbatum minkum; laa tahsaboohu sharral lakum bal huwa khairul lakum; likul limri'im minhum mak tasaba minal-ism; wallazee tawallaa kibrahoo minhum lahoo 'azaabun 'azeem )
11. Indeed, those who have brought this big slander [21] are a party [22] from among you. Consider it not evil for you; rather it is good for you. (23) For every one of them is the sin that he has earned, (24) and among them he who took the greater share, (25) for him is the mighty torment. (26)

لَّوۡلَآ إِذۡ سَمِعۡتُمُوهُ ظَنَّ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنُونَ وَٱلۡمُؤۡمِنَٰتُ بِأَنفُسِهِمۡ خَيۡرٗا وَقَالُواْ هَٰذَآ إِفۡكٞ مُّبِينٞ

Transliteration:( Law laaa iz sami'tumoohu zannal mu'minoona walmu'minaatu bi anfusihim khairanw wa qaaloo haazaaa ifkum mubeen )
12. Why it did not happen when you had heard it that the Muslim men and Muslim women would have thought good of their own people, and say, this is the manifest slander', [27].

لَّوۡلَا جَآءُو عَلَيۡهِ بِأَرۡبَعَةِ شُهَدَآءَۚ فَإِذۡ لَمۡ يَأۡتُواْ بِٱلشُّهَدَآءِ فَأُوْلَـٰٓئِكَ عِندَ ٱللَّهِ هُمُ ٱلۡكَٰذِبُونَ

Transliteration:( Law laa jaaa'oo 'alaihi bi-arba'ati shuhadaaa'; fa iz lam yaatoo bishshuhadaaa'i fa ulaaa 'ika 'indal laahi humul kaaziboon )
13. Why did they not bring four witnesses against it? Therefore, since they did not, they are indeed liars in the sight of Allah. [28]

وَلَوۡلَا فَضۡلُ ٱللَّهِ عَلَيۡكُمۡ وَرَحۡمَتُهُۥ فِي ٱلدُّنۡيَا وَٱلۡأٓخِرَةِ لَمَسَّكُمۡ فِي مَآ أَفَضۡتُمۡ فِيهِ عَذَابٌ عَظِيمٌ

Transliteration:( Wa law laa fadlul laahi 'alaikum wa rahmatuhoo fiddunyaa wal aakhirati lamassakum fee maaa afadtum feehi 'azaabun 'azeem )
14. And if the grace of Allah and His mercy had not been upon you, in this world and the Hereafter, then a mighty torment would have touched you for the muttering into which you plunged. [29]

إِذۡ تَلَقَّوۡنَهُۥ بِأَلۡسِنَتِكُمۡ وَتَقُولُونَ بِأَفۡوَاهِكُم مَّا لَيۡسَ لَكُم بِهِۦ عِلۡمٞ وَتَحۡسَبُونَهُۥ هَيِّنٗا وَهُوَ عِندَ ٱللَّهِ عَظِيمٞ

Transliteration:( Iz talaqqawnahoo bi alsinatikum wa taqooloona bi afwaahikum maa laisa lakum bihee 'ilmunw wa tahsaboo nahoo haiyinanw wa huwa 'indal laahi 'azeem )
15. When you brought such talk on your tongues hearing from one another, and uttered with your mouths that of which you had no knowledge [30] and thought it light, while it was great [31] in the sight of Allah.

وَلَوۡلَآ إِذۡ سَمِعۡتُمُوهُ قُلۡتُم مَّا يَكُونُ لَنَآ أَن نَّتَكَلَّمَ بِهَٰذَا سُبۡحَٰنَكَ هَٰذَا بُهۡتَٰنٌ عَظِيمٞ

Transliteration:( Wa law laaa iz sami'tu moohu qultum maa yakoonu lanaaa an natakallama bihaazaa Subhaanaka haaza buhtaanun 'azeem )
16. And why did you not say, when you heard it, "It is not right for us to talk about this. Allah glorified be You; this is a great lie." [32]

يَعِظُكُمُ ٱللَّهُ أَن تَعُودُواْ لِمِثۡلِهِۦٓ أَبَدًا إِن كُنتُم مُّؤۡمِنِينَ

Transliteration:( Ya'izukumul laahu an ta'oodoo limisliheee abadan in kuntum mu'mineen )
17. Allah admonishes you now never repeat like of it if you believe. [33]

وَيُبَيِّنُ ٱللَّهُ لَكُمُ ٱلۡأٓيَٰتِۚ وَٱللَّهُ عَلِيمٌ حَكِيمٌ

Transliteration:( Wa yubaiyinul laahu lakumul Aayaat; wallaahu 'Aleemun Hakeem )
18. And Allah explains to you His signs clearly. And Allah is Knowing, wise [34].

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ يُحِبُّونَ أَن تَشِيعَ ٱلۡفَٰحِشَةُ فِي ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ لَهُمۡ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٞ فِي ٱلدُّنۡيَا وَٱلۡأٓخِرَةِۚ وَٱللَّهُ يَعۡلَمُ وَأَنتُمۡ لَا تَعۡلَمُونَ

Transliteration:( Innal lazeena yuhibboona an tashee'al faahishatu fil lazeena aamanoo lahum 'azaabun aleemun fid dunyaa wal Aakhirah; wallaahu ya'lamu wa antum laa ta'lamoon )
19. Those who desire that scandal should spread [35] among the Muslims, for them is the painful torment in this world and the Hereafter and Allah knows and you know not.

وَلَوۡلَا فَضۡلُ ٱللَّهِ عَلَيۡكُمۡ وَرَحۡمَتُهُۥ وَأَنَّ ٱللَّهَ رَءُوفٞ رَّحِيمٞ

Transliteration:( Wa law laa fadlul laahi 'alaikum wa rahmatuhoo wa annal laaha Ra'oofur Raheem (section 2) )
20. And if there had not been the grace of Allah and His mercy [36] upon you and that Allah is Kind enough, Merciful to you, (then you would have experienced its hardship).
