The summary/theme of the surah An-Nur

In response to the slander against Sayyidah Aisha, this Surah was revealed to strengthen the moral fiber of the Muslim community. A number of laws and guidance are given to reform the Muslim community: Rape, adultery, and fornication, all of which were already declared social crimes in Surah Al-Ahzab.

Lesson learned from surah An-Nur

  1. Don’t make unfounded accusations.  
  2. When you hear of slander or a false accusation, say: سبْحَانَكَ هَذَا بُهْتَانٌ عَظِيْم  
  3. Don’t spread rumours.  
  4. Don’t follow the footsteps of Shayá¹­'n.  
  5. Have a big heart and forgive those who have wronged you; Allah's will forgive you in return.  
  6. Learn the rules of seeking permission before entering a place; be it a house or a room.  
  7. Men should lower their gazes and safeguard their private parts.  
  8. Women should lower their gazes and safeguard their private parts.  
  9. Learn the rules of ḥij'b and implement them.  
  10. Allah's created every living thing from water.

بِسۡمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحۡمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

 

أَلَمۡ تَرَ أَنَّ ٱللَّهَ يُسَبِّحُ لَهُۥ مَن فِي ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَٱلطَّيۡرُ صَـٰٓفَّـٰتٖۖ كُلّٞ قَدۡ عَلِمَ صَلَاتَهُۥ وَتَسۡبِيحَهُۥۗ وَٱللَّهُ عَلِيمُۢ بِمَا يَفۡعَلُونَ

Transliteration:( Alam tara annal laaha yusabbihu lahoo man fissamaawaati wal ardi wat tairu saaaffaatim kullun qad 'alima Salaatahoo wa tasbeehah; wallaahu 'aleemum bimaa yaf'aloon )
41. Have you not seen [112] that all who are in the heavens and the earth [113] glorify Allah, and so do the birds spreading their wings [114]? Everyone knows his prayer and his way of glorifying [115], and Allah knows their deeds [116].

وَلِلَّهِ مُلۡكُ ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِۖ وَإِلَى ٱللَّهِ ٱلۡمَصِيرُ

Transliteration:( Wa lillaahi mulkus samaawaati wal ardi wa ilal laahil maseer )
42. And to Allah belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth [117], and to Allah is the return.

أَلَمۡ تَرَ أَنَّ ٱللَّهَ يُزۡجِي سَحَابٗا ثُمَّ يُؤَلِّفُ بَيۡنَهُۥ ثُمَّ يَجۡعَلُهُۥ رُكَامٗا فَتَرَى ٱلۡوَدۡقَ يَخۡرُجُ مِنۡ خِلَٰلِهِۦ وَيُنَزِّلُ مِنَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ مِن جِبَالٖ فِيهَا مِنۢ بَرَدٖ فَيُصِيبُ بِهِۦ مَن يَشَآءُ وَيَصۡرِفُهُۥ عَن مَّن يَشَآءُۖ يَكَادُ سَنَا بَرۡقِهِۦ يَذۡهَبُ بِٱلۡأَبۡصَٰرِ

Transliteration:( Alam tara annal laaha yuzjee sahaaban summa yu'allifu bainahoo summa yaj'aluhoo rukaaman fataral wadqa yakhruju min khilaalihee wa yunazzilu minas samaaa'i min jibaalin feehaa mim baradin fa yuseebu bihee mai yashaaa'u wa yasrifuhoo 'am mai yashaaa'u yakkaadu sanaa barqihee yazhabu bil absaar )
43. Have you not observed how Allah drives the clouds gently, then joins them together, and then piles them one over the other so that you see rain [119] coming forth from their midst? And He sends down from the sky mountains [120] of ice, from which He hails whom He wills and turns it away from whom He wills [121]. It is very near that the flash of its lightning may take away the sight [122].

يُقَلِّبُ ٱللَّهُ ٱلَّيۡلَ وَٱلنَّهَارَۚ إِنَّ فِي ذَٰلِكَ لَعِبۡرَةٗ لِّأُوْلِي ٱلۡأَبۡصَٰرِ

Transliteration:( Yuqallibul laahul laila wannahaar; inna fee zaalika la'ibratal li ulil absaar )
44. Allah alternates the night and the day [123]. Indeed, in it is a lesson for those who have vision.

وَٱللَّهُ خَلَقَ كُلَّ دَآبَّةٖ مِّن مَّآءٖۖ فَمِنۡهُم مَّن يَمۡشِي عَلَىٰ بَطۡنِهِۦ وَمِنۡهُم مَّن يَمۡشِي عَلَىٰ رِجۡلَيۡنِ وَمِنۡهُم مَّن يَمۡشِي عَلَىٰٓ أَرۡبَعٖۚ يَخۡلُقُ ٱللَّهُ مَا يَشَآءُۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَيۡءٖ قَدِيرٞ

Transliteration:( Wallaahu khalaqa kulla daaabbatim mim maaa'in faminhum mai yamshee 'alaa batnihee wa minhum mai yamshee 'alaa rijlaine wa minhum mai yamshee 'alaaa arba'; yakhluqul laahu maa yashaaa'; innal laaha 'alaa kulli shai'in Qadeer )
45. And Allah has created every creature from water [124]. Among them are those that walk on their bellies [125], and among them are those that walk on two legs [126], and among them are those that walk on four legs [127]. Allah creates what He wills [128]. Indeed, Allah is capable of all things.

لَّقَدۡ أَنزَلۡنَآ ءَايَٰتٖ مُّبَيِّنَٰتٖۚ وَٱللَّهُ يَهۡدِي مَن يَشَآءُ إِلَىٰ صِرَٰطٖ مُّسۡتَقِيمٖ

Transliteration:( Laqad anzalnaaa Aayaatim mubaiyinaat; wallaahu yahdee mai yashaaa'u ilaa Siraatim Mustaqeem )
46. Indeed, We have sent down clear and explanatory signs, and Allah guides whom He wills to the straight path [129].

وَيَقُولُونَ ءَامَنَّا بِٱللَّهِ وَبِٱلرَّسُولِ وَأَطَعۡنَا ثُمَّ يَتَوَلَّىٰ فَرِيقٞ مِّنۡهُم مِّنۢ بَعۡدِ ذَٰلِكَۚ وَمَآ أُوْلَـٰٓئِكَ بِٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِينَ

Transliteration:( Wa yaqooloona aamannaa billaahi wa bir Rasooli wa ata'naa summa yatawallaa fareequm minhum mim ba'di zaalik; wa maaa ulaaa'ika bilmu'mineen )
47. And they say, "We have believed in Allah and in the Messenger, and we obeyed." Then some of them turn away after this [130]. And those are not true Muslims [131].

وَإِذَا دُعُوٓاْ إِلَى ٱللَّهِ وَرَسُولِهِۦ لِيَحۡكُمَ بَيۡنَهُمۡ إِذَا فَرِيقٞ مِّنۡهُم مُّعۡرِضُونَ

Transliteration:( Wa izaa du'ooo ilal laahi wa Rasoolihee li yahkuma bainahum izaa fareequm minhum mu'ridoon )
48. And when they are called towards Allah and His Messenger [132] that the Messenger may judge between them, behold, a faction of them turns away [133] every time.

وَإِن يَكُن لَّهُمُ ٱلۡحَقُّ يَأۡتُوٓاْ إِلَيۡهِ مُذۡعِنِينَ

Transliteration:( Wa iny-yakul lahumul haqqu yaatooo ilaihi muz'ineen )
49. And if the right is upon their side, they would have come to him submitting.

أَفِي قُلُوبِهِم مَّرَضٌ أَمِ ٱرۡتَابُوٓاْ أَمۡ يَخَافُونَ أَن يَحِيفَ ٱللَّهُ عَلَيۡهِمۡ وَرَسُولُهُۥۚ بَلۡ أُوْلَـٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلظَّـٰلِمُونَ

Transliteration:( Afee quloobihim maradun amirtaabooo am yakhaafoona any yaheefallaahu 'alaihim wa Rasooluh; bal ulaaa'ika humuz zaalimoon (section 6) )
50. Is there a disease in their hearts? Or do they fear that Allah and His Messenger will be unjust to them [134]? No, it is they who are the unjust ones [135].
