About the Surah Fuṣṣilat

Fuṣṣilat (Arabic: فُصِّلَت‎, fuṣṣilat "are distinctly explained" or "explained in detail"), also known as Sūrat Ḥā Mīm as-Sajdah (Arabic: سُورَة حٰمٓ السَّجْدَة), is the 41st chapter (surah) of the Qur'an.

Summary/Theme of Surah Fuṣṣilat

According to this Surah, the Qur'an cannot be changed by noise and falsehoods. Whether the falsehood comes from the front or makes an indirect attack from behind, it cannot succeed in refuting it.

Lessons Learned from Surah Fuṣṣilat

  1. Destruction of 'Aad and Thamud:

    • The people of 'Aad were destroyed by a severe wind that blew for days. They thought there was no one stronger than them.
    • The people of Thamud were destroyed by a scream.
  2. Testimony on the Day of Judgement:

    • The ears, eyes, and skin of the people of Jahannam will testify against them on the Day of Judgement. They will ask, ‘Why did you testify against us?!’ They will say, ‘The being who has the power to make things speak, made us speak. [We had no choice].’
  3. Distraction Tactics of Disbelievers:

    • The disbelievers would say to each other, ‘Do not listen to this Qur'an, rather, create distractions when it's being recited so that you may overpower its effect.’
  4. Comfort for the Believers:

    • Those who believe and thereafter stay steadfast will be comforted by angels at the time of death and in the Hereafter.
  5. Good Character:

    • Always show good character in dealings. If you do, even the staunchest enemy shall be won over.
  6. Seeking Refuge in Allah:

    • If you feel Shayṭān is trying his work on you, seek refuge in Allah.
  7. Independence of Allah:

    • Allah is not in need of anyone worshipping Him. Despite that, there is no shortage of anyone worshipping Him from His creation.
  8. Personal Accountability:

    • Whoever does good will benefit himself, and whoever does evil will harm himself.
  9. Human Nature and Despondency:

    • Man never tires from asking for good, but when he is afflicted with something, he becomes despondent.
    • When a man is blessed with goodness after hardship by Allah, he thinks of it as his right, and turns to disobedience of Allah.
  10. Turning to Allah in Hardship:

    • When Allah blesses man, he turns away from Allah, yet when he is afflicted with troubles, he turns to Allah in lengthy prayers.
  11. Signs of Allah:

    • Allah will continue to show people signs from within and from afar until the truth becomes clear to them.

بِسۡمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحۡمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

 

ثُمَّ ٱسۡتَوَىٰٓ إِلَى ٱلسَّمَآءِ وَهِيَ دُخَانٞ فَقَالَ لَهَا وَلِلۡأَرۡضِ ٱئۡتِيَا طَوۡعًا أَوۡ كَرۡهٗا قَالَتَآ أَتَيۡنَا طَآئِعِينَ

Transliteration:( Summas tawaaa ilas-samaaa'i wa hiya dukhaanun faqaala lahaa wa lil ardi'tiyaaa taw'an aw karhan qaalataaa atainaa taaa'i'een )
11.Then He turned towards the heavens and it was a smoke [25]. Then He said to it and to the earth: Come [26] both of you willingly or unwillingly". They both submitted: "We come will willingly (27)"

فَقَضَىٰهُنَّ سَبۡعَ سَمَٰوَاتٖ فِي يَوۡمَيۡنِ وَأَوۡحَىٰ فِي كُلِّ سَمَآءٍ أَمۡرَهَاۚ وَزَيَّنَّا ٱلسَّمَآءَ ٱلدُّنۡيَا بِمَصَٰبِيحَ وَحِفۡظٗاۚ ذَٰلِكَ تَقۡدِيرُ ٱلۡعَزِيزِ ٱلۡعَلِيمِ

Transliteration:( Faqadaahunna sab'a samaawaatin fee yawmaini wa awhaa fee kulli samaaa'in amarahaa; wa zaiyannassa maaa'ad dunyaa bimasaabeeha wa hifzaa; zaalika taqdeerul 'Azeezil 'Aleem )
12.So, He ordained them in seven heavens in two [28] days and inspired each heaven its own mandate [29]. And We adorned the lower heaven with glittering (30) stars and guards (31). This is the regulation of the Most Honourable, the All Knowing (32).

فَإِنۡ أَعۡرَضُواْ فَقُلۡ أَنذَرۡتُكُمۡ صَٰعِقَةٗ مِّثۡلَ صَٰعِقَةِ عَادٖ وَثَمُودَ

Transliteration:( Fa-in a'radoo faqul anzartukum saa'iqatam misla saa'iqati 'Aadinw wa Samood )
13. But if they turn [33] away their faces, then please declare: "I warn you of a thunderbolt, like the thunderbolt[34] faced by Aad and Thamud".

إِذۡ جَآءَتۡهُمُ ٱلرُّسُلُ مِنۢ بَيۡنِ أَيۡدِيهِمۡ وَمِنۡ خَلۡفِهِمۡ أَلَّا تَعۡبُدُوٓاْ إِلَّا ٱللَّهَۖ قَالُواْ لَوۡ شَآءَ رَبُّنَا لَأَنزَلَ مَلَـٰٓئِكَةٗ فَإِنَّا بِمَآ أُرۡسِلۡتُم بِهِۦ كَٰفِرُونَ

Transliteration:( Iz jaaa'at humur Rusulu mim baini aydeehim wa min khalfihim allaa ta'budooo illal laaha qaaloo law shaaa'a Rabunaa la anzala malaaa 'ikatan fa innaa bimaaa ursiltum bihee kaafiroon )
14. Then their Messengers came to them from before them and behind them[35] saying: "Worship none except Allah". They said:[36] "Had our Lord wished so. He would have sent down angels (37). So we disbelieve in what you have (38)been sent with".

فَأَمَّا عَادٞ فَٱسۡتَكۡبَرُواْ فِي ٱلۡأَرۡضِ بِغَيۡرِ ٱلۡحَقِّ وَقَالُواْ مَنۡ أَشَدُّ مِنَّا قُوَّةًۖ أَوَلَمۡ يَرَوۡاْ أَنَّ ٱللَّهَ ٱلَّذِي خَلَقَهُمۡ هُوَ أَشَدُّ مِنۡهُمۡ قُوَّةٗۖ وَكَانُواْ بِـَٔايَٰتِنَا يَجۡحَدُونَ

Transliteration:( Fa ammaa 'Aadun fastak baroo fil ardi bighairul haqqi wa qaaloo man ashaddu minnaa quwwatan awalam yaraw annal laahal lazee khalaqahum Huwa ashaddu minhum quwwatanw wa kaanoo bi Aayaatinaa yajhadoon )
15. And as for the 'Aad [39], they became unjustly [40] boastful in the land and said: "Who is stronger in might than us?" [41] Did they not know that Allah, Who created them, is stronger [42] than them in might? But, they continued to deny Our Signs.

فَأَرۡسَلۡنَا عَلَيۡهِمۡ رِيحٗا صَرۡصَرٗا فِيٓ أَيَّامٖ نَّحِسَاتٖ لِّنُذِيقَهُمۡ عَذَابَ ٱلۡخِزۡيِ فِي ٱلۡحَيَوٰةِ ٱلدُّنۡيَاۖ وَلَعَذَابُ ٱلۡأٓخِرَةِ أَخۡزَىٰۖ وَهُمۡ لَا يُنصَرُونَ

Transliteration:( Fa arsalnaa 'alaihim reehan sarsaran feee ayyaamin nahisaatil linuzeeqahum 'azaabal khizyi fil hayaatid dunyaa wa la'azaabul Aakhirati akhzaa wa hum laa yunsaroon )
16.So, We sent upon them a furious cold[43] wind in the days of their misfortune [44], so that We made them taste the penalty of being degraded in the life of this world. And indeed, the penalty of the Hereafter is more degrading (45) and they shall not be helped (46).

وَأَمَّا ثَمُودُ فَهَدَيۡنَٰهُمۡ فَٱسۡتَحَبُّواْ ٱلۡعَمَىٰ عَلَى ٱلۡهُدَىٰ فَأَخَذَتۡهُمۡ صَٰعِقَةُ ٱلۡعَذَابِ ٱلۡهُونِ بِمَا كَانُواْ يَكۡسِبُونَ

Transliteration:( Wa ammaa Samoodu fahadinaahum fastahabbul 'ama 'alal huda fa akhazathum saa'iqatul 'azaabil hooni bimaa kaanoo yaksiboon )
17. And as for the Thamud, We guided[47] them, but they preferred blindness to guidance. Therefore, the thunder of the degrading penalty overtook[48] them as the earning of their doing ".(49)

وَنَجَّيۡنَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ وَكَانُواْ يَتَّقُونَ

Transliteration:( Wa najjainal lazeena aamanoo wa kaanoo yattaqoon (section 2) )
18. And We save those who believe and remain pious [50],

وَيَوۡمَ يُحۡشَرُ أَعۡدَآءُ ٱللَّهِ إِلَى ٱلنَّارِ فَهُمۡ يُوزَعُونَ

Transliteration:( Wa yawma yuhsharu a'daaa'ul laahi ilan Naari fahum yooza'oon )
19. And on the day that the enemies of Allah shall be driven [51] towards the Fire; then those who will come first shall be stopped till those coming next [52] should meet them.

حَتَّىٰٓ إِذَا مَا جَآءُوهَا شَهِدَ عَلَيۡهِمۡ سَمۡعُهُمۡ وَأَبۡصَٰرُهُمۡ وَجُلُودُهُم بِمَا كَانُواْ يَعۡمَلُونَ

Transliteration:( Hattaaa izaa maa jaaa'oohaa shahida 'alaihim samu'uhum wa absaaruhum wa julooduhum bimaa kaanoo ya'maloon )
20.Till when they reach there, whence their ears and their eyes and their skins will bear witness [53] against their doings.
