The summary/theme of the surah Luqman:

Luqman, a wise man who dispenses advice to his son in verses 12-19, gives the surah its name. According to the verse, those who follow Shirk are blindly following their forefathers. To be wise, one must believe in Allah. The verse reiterates one's gratitude and obedience to one's parents.

Lesson learned from surah Luqman:

  1. Those who try to divert the attention of people from the Book of Allah's shall receive a painful punishment.
  2. Ponder over the favours of Allah's and show gratitude.
  3. Whoever is grateful to Allah's only benefits him/herself, whilst whoever is ungrateful, Allah's is independent of his gratitude.
  4. Shirk is the greatest oppression.
  5. Do good to your parents who went through great difficulties in bringing you up.
  6. Even if they tell you to commit shirk, don’t obey them, but still be courteous to them.
  7. Nothing escapes the knowledge of Allah's.
  8. Be patient upon afflictions.
  9. Don’t walk arrogantly.
  10. Don’t raise your voice unnecessarily.
  11. Only Allah's has knowledge of 5 things:
  12. The time of the Hour
  13. Of rainfall
  14. Of what in in the wombs
  15. What will happen tomorrow
  16. Where people will die.

Transliteration:( Haazaa khalqul laahi fa aroonee maazaa khalaqal lazeena min doonih; baliz zaalimoona fee dalalim Mubeen (section 1) )
11.This is the creation of Allah; show me what others [17] have created besides Him. Nay, the unjust are in clear [18] error.

Transliteration:( Wa laqad aatainaa Luqmaanal hikmata anishkur lillaah; wa many yashkur fa innamaa yashkuru linafsihee wa man kafara fa innal laaha Ghaniyyun Hameed )
12. And indeed We bestowed upon Luqman [19] wisdom [20] saying: "Be grateful (21) to Allah". And whoever is grateful is grateful to the good of his own self (22), and whoever is ungrateful, then surely Allah is Self-Sufficient (23), Praised.

13. And remember when Luqman said to his son, while he was advising him: "O my son, associate not anyone with Allah". Indeed, the association with Allah is a tremendous [24] wrong.

Transliteration:( Wa wassainal insaana bi waalidaihi hamalat hu ummuhoo wahnan 'alaa wahninw wa fisaaluhoo fee 'aamaini anishkur lee wa liwaalidaika ilaiyal maseer )
14.And We have stressed on man [25] concerning his parents. The mother bears the child, undergoing weakness upon weakness [26]. And his weaning takes two years (27). So be grateful to Me and to your parents (28), And lastly the return is to me.

Transliteration:( Wa in jaahadaaka 'alaaa an tushrika bee maa laisa laka bihee 'ilmun falaa tuti'humaa wa saahib humaa fid dunyaa ma'roofanw wattabi' sabeela man anaaba ilayy; summa ilaiya marji'ukum fa unabbi'ukum bimaa kuntum ta'maloon )
15.And if they both strive to make you associate with Me a thing which you have no knowledge of [29], then do not obey[30] them, but keep company (31) with them in all the worldly affairs. And follow him who turns (32) to Me. Then to Me is your return, and I shall tell you what you used to do.

Transliteration:( Ya bunaiya innahaaa in taku misqaala habbatim min khardalin fatakun fee sakhratin aw fis samaawaati aw fil ardi yaati bi Allah; innal laaha lateefun Khabeer )
16."O my son! Even if it (the evil) were the weight (33) of a grain of mustard seed, and even though it may be in a rock, or in the heaven, Allah will bring (34) it forth. Certainly, Allah is the Knower of every subtlety, All Aware (35).

Transliteration:( Yaa bunaiya aqimis-Salaata waamur bilma'roofi wanha 'anil munkari wasbir 'alaa maaa asaabaka inna zaalika min 'azmil umoor )
17."O my dear son! Establish [36] prayer and bid the doing of good and forbid [37] evil and be patient (38) over whatever befalls upon you. Surely, those are affairs which require determination (39)".

Transliteration:( Wa laa tusa'-'ir khaddaka linnaasi wa laa tamshi fil ardi maarahan innal laaha laa yuhibbu kulla mukhtaalin fakhoor )
18. And neither turn your cheek crooked [40] while talking to anyone nor walk [41] in the earth haughtily. Surely, Allah does not love any arrogant boaster (42).

Transliteration:( Waqsid fee mashyika waghdud min sawtik; inna ankaral aswaati lasawtul hameer (section 2) )
19. And walk moderately [43] and lower your voice. Surely in all voices the most hateful voice is the braying voice of the ass [44].

20.Have you not seen that Allah has made subservient for you whatever is in the heavens and the earth and had bestowed upon you, in full, His Bounty [45], open and hidden? And among people are some who dispute about Allah without knowledge and with no wisdom and without a Luminous [46] Book.
