The 12th surah (chapter) of the Glorious Quran is called Yusuf. It is divided into two juz/paaras. It contains 111 ayaat (verses) and was revealed in Makkah before Prophet migrated to Medina. In the 12th juz, verses 1-52 are found, in the 13th juz, verses 53-111 are found.

This Surah was revealed during the last phase of the Prophet's time in Makkah, when the Quraysh were contemplating either executing, exiling or imprisoning him. The Jews urged the disbelievers to challenge Muhammad (pbuh) with a question - why did the Israelites go to Egypt? As the Arabs were not familiar with their history and traditions, it seemed as if there would be no appropriate response to this. Surprisingly, Allah enabled an answer by revealing the story of Yusuf (Joseph) then and there. This unexpected event left the Qureysh embarrassed as it nullified their scheme, and served as a warning in using Yusuf's brothers' behavior as an example of what may come for them.

All Rasools, including Yusuf, were human beings; their faith was the same as that of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) and they all invited people to the same Message. Characters molded by Islam, based on worshipping Allah and judgment in the hereafter, are juxtaposed against those shaped by disbelief and ignorance, formed out of veneration of false gods and materialism. The believers must decide for themselves which pattern they will choose. Moreover, no one can impede Allah’s plan or decree. It is advised to remain within Divine Law while striving for objectives as success and failure are in the Almighty’s hands alone. Believers should strive for the Truth with trust in God, helping them confront their foes with confidence and courage. From Yusuf’s story, it is established that someone possessing true Islamic character can conquer everything through the strength of character. This revelation attests to Muhammad's (pbuh) Prophethood with knowledge gathered only via revelation; furthermore, it serves as a warning to Quraysh that conflict between them and the Prophet would end in his victory over them.
